Middle-aged whites in US dying at a startling rate
Daily Journal/WaPo ^ | 11/3/2015 | Lenny Bernstein and Joel Achenbach

Posted on 11/03/2015 12:47:17 PM PST by mojito

A large segment of white middle-aged Americans has suffered a startling rise in its death rate since 1999, reversing decades of progress, according to a new review of statistics published Monday.

The mortality rate for white men and women between the ages of 45 and 54 with less than a college education increased by half a percent per year between 1999 and 2013, most likely because of problems with legal and illegal drugs, alcohol, and suicide, according to the study released in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences....

The rising death rate was accompanied by a parallel increase in the rate of illness, the authors wrote.

"Drugs and alcohol, and suicide ... are clearly the proximate cause," said Angus Deaton, the 2015 Nobel laureate in economics, who co-authored the paper....

"Half a million people are dead who should not be dead," he added. "About 40 times the Ebola stats. You're getting up there with HIV-AIDS."

Since at least 1970, Americans and residents of other wealthy countries have generally enjoyed longer and healthier lives, as smoking has declined, better treatments have been developed and preventive measures have had an impact on mortality.

But these bleak findings could have far-reaching implications as the surviving members of this sizable segment of the Baby Boom continue toward retirement and eligibility for Medicare, according to experts....

"This is the first indicator that the plane has crashed," said Jonathan Skinner, a professor of economics at Dartmouth College, who reviewed the study and co-authored a commentary that appears with it. "I don't know what's going on, but the plane has definitely crashed."

There seems to be an uptick in the number of people I know who are battling cancer. Too many are losing the battle.

People with big problems turn to drugs, alcohol, and suicide for solace. More people with big problems than ever before now. Thanks Obama!

I noticed this in the article “The mortality rate for white men and women between the ages of 45 and 54 with less than a college education increased by half a percent per year”.

So I didn’t go to college, I started but left after one semester. I am still alive, so what gives? of course tho I am about ten years above the top age of that group. The article also states that it is more than likely a drug problem. There are more illicit drugs used in college than most other places.

I think they just realize how remote of a chance they have of scoring with a Khardashian chick since they are white and end it all.

Easy to figure out,but the government experts won’t admit it. Many studies have shown that marriage improves health and that married men live longer.Millions of men are divorced and are not able to cope with the loss of their home and family. Many are under financial stress as well as emotional stress, both detrimental to good health.

Most of middle America baby boomers were left holding the bag. It’s no secret. Middle America was decimated. Most everything before them was looted and consumed. Their rolling on worn out low tires. But now they’ll be charged for air.

Looking sharp America.

No one has been left further behind than white working class men without a college education. No philanthropists set up foundations for these men, no Obamas go to their funerals and no one sets aside a preferment for them. They work at the register of 7/11 and according to their betters, they should be happy with that.

Let’s take this seriously. I personally know of 4 friends that have committed suicide in the last year. I have come to the point I look at the obits in our paper and look for the words “died suddenly”. That means suicide.

Not really, because typically, college aged adults use on the weekends to party and just have a little release.

But a grown person, trying to avoid the trials of everyday life is going to OD much faster due to their bodies being in worse shape, using too much, etc...
