A large segment of white middle-aged Americans has suffered a startling rise in its death rate since 1999, reversing decades of progress, according to a new review of statistics published Monday.
The mortality rate for white men and women between the ages of 45 and 54 with less than a college education increased by half a percent per year between 1999 and 2013, most likely because of problems with legal and illegal drugs, alcohol, and suicide, according to the study released in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences....
The rising death rate was accompanied by a parallel increase in the rate of illness, the authors wrote.
"Drugs and alcohol, and suicide ... are clearly the proximate cause," said Angus Deaton, the 2015 Nobel laureate in economics, who co-authored the paper....
"Half a million people are dead who should not be dead," he added. "About 40 times the Ebola stats. You're getting up there with HIV-AIDS."
Since at least 1970, Americans and residents of other wealthy countries have generally enjoyed longer and healthier lives, as smoking has declined, better treatments have been developed and preventive measures have had an impact on mortality.
But these bleak findings could have far-reaching implications as the surviving members of this sizable segment of the Baby Boom continue toward retirement and eligibility for Medicare, according to experts....
"This is the first indicator that the plane has crashed," said Jonathan Skinner, a professor of economics at Dartmouth College, who reviewed the study and co-authored a commentary that appears with it. "I don't know what's going on, but the plane has definitely crashed."

I am 53. I have know any number of friends from high school with families, decent jobs etc, who have been using drugs their whole life.....and just off themselves. Not hard drugs but your basic escapism stuff. Our society is becoming increasingly selfish and self absorbed. Facebook, selfies etc. Prior generations lived for God, for Country for Family. These concepts are in shambles today. Everyone is out for the self.....until they realize the self doesn’t really matter.
Quick fix. It is a shame.....but only the tip of the iceburg. Imagine what it will be like for the cell phone generation......

I don't think the government is actually pulling the trigger, but they are definitely providing the loaded gun.
This is the kind of problem seen everywhere in Western European socialist states. Substance abuse is an epidemic, because men (especially) have no reason to exert themselves and succeed.
The government will take care of them if they don't. And if they do, the government will take away most of their success.
So, more and more just say "f*** it", and descend into behavior that is best described as post-adolescent fraternity boy. But, their bodies aren't young anymore, and they destroy themselves from the inside out.
I hear you. Every news video that I see of people on the street shows them walking down the sidewalks and crossing streets while looking down at their cell phones.
They seem to have no situational awareness at all. I’m surprised that more of them aren’t killed than they are, and texting while driving is another self-destructive habit. Add drugs to the mix and I’m amazed that many of them live to middle age.
I am sorry you have lost four friends to suicide. That’s terrible. God bless you.

Yep, all the addictions mentioned are stand ins for sudden poverty or distress.
Not like Obama cares.
So right, the various ethnic race-baiters only commonality is their hatred of whites. No whites, and that commonality is gone.
Obama celebrates white men brought low. Most of these people, of course, are children of immigrants who never owned a slave, supported slavery, or supported Jim Crow. That’s what kills people like Obama. They know most folks had no connection to slavery and so they have to move the goalposts to ensure white guilt. Well, they can bugger off!
During the 70’s to 70’s, a lot of Baby Boomers died before their time. Now it’s happening to Generation X.

Well, what I was trying to say both non-college-educated and college-educated start off with x amount of substance abuse I would think. Maybe college-educated back off as they enter the work force and non-college don’t? Maybe because their work is less challenging and they feel less worthwhile?
