People are jumping all over the guy for the “you’re holding your gun backwards” line, but if you click through to his actual article, he’s not wrong. I was always taught to carry a shotgun with the action open and the muzzle pointing down. That’s what the guy is talking about in his article—he’s criticizing Cruz for not following that safety rule.
He’s making it into a bigger deal than it is (paid by the word?), but he’s not entirely wrong.
Yes he is entirely wrong.
When the gun is broken and empty, it cannot be pointed. The stock and action are pointing in one direction and the barrels in another. It is in one of those rare conditions where it is totally safe.

When the gun is unloaded, it is as safe as it can get. When everyone can SEE it is unloaded, it is pretty darn good too. And when a shotgun is broken open, I just don’t worry very much...
