I recently visited a cemetery in the south of France where hundreds, upon hundreds of Americans are buried who led an assault on D-Day that is seldom recognized.

Just the sight of those white crosses makes one think of how eclipsed that cemetery is by the one where the dead of Normandy’s D-Day are buried.

You’re right, however, ‘many’ would have been better, but then why nitpick?

I generally don't - but the other side surely will, that's how they change the terms of the debate to those they like, leading to you (or us) losing the debate. Take that weapon out of their hands.
