Rift Emerges Among Gun Owners Over Concealing Weapons in Schools

CLIO, Mich. When Kenneth Herman visits his daughter’s school, the handgun holstered to his right hip is visible to anyone. And that has caused him problems.

School officials have denied Mr. Herman access to school buildings, asked him to wait in the principal’s office and called the Sheriff’s Department on him. So Mr. Herman, a paramedic who grew up in this semirural community 85 miles northwest of Detroit, sued Clio Area Schools for the right to carry his weapon openly on school grounds, and in August he won the case. The district has appealed.

Now his dispute with the school district has become part of a statewide debate over guns in schools that has exposed a rare split among firearm owners. It pits proponents of widespread open carry like Mr. Herman against other gun owners who believe concealed weapons are more appropriate in some settings.

One step at a time.

Win the Concealed battle for now.

We’ll win the open carry battle later. Count on it.

Its not a rift. It’s a disagreement on holster selection. I would prefer open carry because it is more comfortable, but I am perfectly happy to carry concealed too. I’d like to have the choice and make it MY choice.

Well the cops “open carry” and it doesn’t seem to bother anyone. And in some instances, they are less reliable users of firearms than the rest of us. It’s way past time when everyone got used to seeing openly-carried guns.

If the poor teachers at Sandy Hook could have a do-over, I’ll bet they’d have preferred to face Adam Lanza with a gun of their own.

Open-carry helps establish that the place is not a soft target. Concealed-carry keeps a would-be perp guessing.

So, a little from Column A, and a little from Column B.

Open carry in a school seems problematic in tight heavy population settings. The first open carry whose gun gets taken away and it costs lives, the end comes quickly.

That’s my problem with open carry anywhere! For safety’s sake, I would OC in a good retention holster with thumb snap, flap, or some other positive retention device. But the OC photos I see posted right here almost always show the carrier wearing a open-top holster behind the side seam, obviously planning for a quick-draw contest, but not even thinking about how easy it would be to snatch that gun from behind.

Carrying guns on school property is illegal in most states.

Therefore, for the majority of us, it is very prudent to conceal whatever weapon we may be carrying at our children’s schools.

I’d be happy with either. Maryland doesn’t believe in rights conferred under the US Constitution.

Get caught, go to jail around here.

Thank you for your response. I agree with your comments there.

To me, it seems wise to confuse anyone looking to take you on.

Let them think you’re unarmed.

If they know you’re armed, they’ll plan better.

Let them come at you in the open, and then SURPRISE!

Others should chime in, because they may have thought this out better than me.

That’s why I like having the choice. If I am in a time/place where I should be more concerned about gangs of feral “teenagers”, I want a full-size gun with fat mags and a couple reloads and that means concealed carry is not practical. But for most days and nights where I am safely in suburbia, I can get by with my small, low-capacity, well-concealed gun.

As we learned last fall, the greatest danger about open or concealed carry comes from school officials.

Okay. That makes sense.

I have fat mags as well. I have a little Astra that I like quite a bit. It’s a 38, but it’ll get the job done.

I am all for gun rights but the only guns I want at the school are those carried by law enforcement and teachers at the school. those with conceal weapon permits are ok as long as they are put away till they are needed. the problem with a side arm just carried into the school has more to do with how disruptive it can be.

From March.

The choir director effectively swatted a legal carrier. Fortunately it ended well with the armed and harmless man returning to his seat with his gun.

In Michigan open carriers don’t need a permit but can’t carry in schools. Concealed carriers can carry in schools but must carry openly.

Screwy and pointless but that’s the way it is.
