I never lost a weapon but I had a brother who did. It was a .44mag S&W so he really wanted it back. It was recovered but the cops refused to release it back to him. He spent more than the value of the weapon trying to get it back but to no avail.
I too spent more than a gun’s worth to get it back after a crime.
