The words men and women are soon to come off many Philadelphia restrooms, thanks to a bill passed Thursday.
City Council unanimously approved the ordinance requiring that single-occupancy public restrooms be labeled as gender-neutral, and that men or women be dropped from signs.
The bill, introduced by Councilman Mark Squilla, applies to single-occupant bathrooms open to the public and not to multiple-stall restrooms. Mayor Nutter, whose Office of LGBT Affairs drafted the bill, is expected to sign it.
"For business owners, the only impact is taking down one sign and putting up another," said Nellie Fitzpatrick, the office's director. "But for individuals trying to access these spaces, it's eliminating barriers that are unnecessary and should not exist.
"Gender-specific bathrooms have been catalysts for harassment or violence against transgender people and have discouraged some from going out in public, Fitzpatrick said. She called the bill "one of about a million small steps" needed to combat the discrimination and violence transgender people face.

Mayor Nutter....nuf ced
Hey, I have a novel idea - why don’t they just make two restrooms - one for men and one for women? Then there wouldn’t be any confusion (except for degenerates who belong in jail or the loony bin).

My favorite little diner has had that for many years. As long as the door has a lock, what’s the problem?
Democrats the party of the past? I never saw anything like this in the past.
It makes it mandatory.
Is there even a need for a ‘Men’ or ‘Women’ sign on a single stall bathroom (assuming the door will lock)?
Of course, if a muhamadan male uses a washroom and sees that a WOMAN just left it, THAT would set him off! But then EVERYTHING sets them off! Perhaps the washrooms can be ‘muhamadan free’!
“Sorry ma’am...did pee on your foot?”
Most of the single-stall restrooms already are gender-neutral. But each business should be free to make that decision for itself, not be dictated to by a legislature.
Just about every dr’s office and hospital have those. What is the big deal? The ones I have been in have been that way for decades. Lock the cotton picking door. Much ado about nothing.
Philly women will love that strange men or transgendered freaks will have peeed on their toilet seats or with other mixed body fluids.
Idiots-—
Although it might be a good thing for ladies in places like stadiums where the line for the ladies’ room always seems to be a mile long, while the way to our stalls is like a short conga line, with us unzipping, letting fly while barely breaking stride and we’re off, since the dam thing even flushes itesef now ....
but I’m not looking forward to seeing a great looking woman walk out of a public rest room and then I walk in and think to myself, “Dayum, did I just walk into the ape house?”
You know, we guys fluctuate between being incorrigible horn dogs to hopeless romantics.
... why donât they just make two restrooms - one for men and one for women...
What about the rights of the people who dont want to be exposed to this perversion? Their rights mean nothing? Only perverts have fights?
Add a third bathroom for the sexually confused and the accompanying pervs. All would be equal then. That should clear up the issue.
I’d put a sign above each door: “GUESS”
Only perverts have fights? Good blooper.
I’m in favor of, in place of “men” or “women”, for those who feel “challenged” by the terms, the old restroom signs with “Pointers” and “Setters” with little dogs, one pointing and one sitting.
That hopefully would clear up any complexity about what kind of bathroom one needs and discourage anyone who doesn’t like dogs from being there, a “twoferwon” in my opinion.
Inconsiderate females never remember to put the seat back up.
I’d take my 5 year old grandson out of the place and show him how to pee on a car tire.
Yup . . . .
