Cruz's comments about immigration and allowing the banks to fail did position him to inherit most of Trump's supporters should Trump start to tank.
Ben Carson (insofar as he can even articulate coherent policy positions) is closer to Jeb or Rubio than to either Trump or Cruz, so I think that in the end most of Carson's fans will fall in line with the establishment.

I was really impressed with Croz last nifgt. Watched it on the big screen with 200 others at a GOP County “debate watch” party. Croz got the biggest ovation. Everyone there was very pleased with the debate, the moderators were serious about keeping it pretty fair and at a higher level, no stupid snipes, jus serious questions. I appreciate their offering Carson a minute to speak to the character assassination attempts from this week.
I think that line by Cruz was the best of the night. The 2nd best was Rand Paul telling Trump that China was not a party to the TPP agreement. And the third was Rand Paul telling Carly that not talking to Putin was not what Reagan would have done... and that it was Jr High stuff.
It was the perfect way to frame the reason why the media ignores the issue. Clever, witty, biting and memorable. A perfectly crafted sound bite.
