During last night's Republican presidential debate, the Wall Street Journal's Gerard Baker made a critical mistake: He tried to pin Donald Trump down on policy specifics. In this case, it was about trade policy, a subject about which Trump evidently knows very little.
Baker asked the billionaire "which particular parts" of the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade deal he objected to. If he were familiar with the deal, Trump could have raised any of several issues. Instead, he continued with the same word salad about China that he has been issuing forth since long before the TPP had been negotiated and published.
"If you look at how China and India and almost everyone takes advantage of the Untied States - China in particular, because they are so good, it's the number one abuser of this country. If you look at the way they take advantage, it's through currency manipulation. It's not even discussed in the almost 6,000 page agreemen...If [TPP] is approved, it will just be more bad trade deals, more loss of jobs for our country. We are losing jobs like no one's ever lost jobs before. I want to bring jobs back into this country."
It took a clear-headed Rand Paul to bring some reality back into the conversation.
"Hey, Gerard?" Paul interjected. "We might want to point out that China's not part of this deal." The crowed roared with laughter as Trump shrunk before their eyes. (Never mind the fact that Trump had just accused India of currency manipulation - perhaps making him the first person to do so at least in the last decade.)...

Wrong. Trump was specifically talking about China on that particular point.

The question of "rules of origin" for auto parts had been a stumbling block in discussions on the Trans-Pacific Partnership until the end of September, when Mexican and Canadian negotiators appeared to relent and allow the majority of a vehicle's parts to be sourced from outside the 12 countries that are parties to the regional trade deal. Those negotiators ultimately aimed for 45 percent of auto parts to be bought locally, while Japanese negotiators had sought a 32.5 percent floor for local parts, Reuters reported. Because the final text of the deal has not been published, the ultimate percentage remains unclear. But either option would allow for the majority of a vehicle's components to be sourced from outside TPP countries.

The media has been discussing for weeks that China can sign onto the TPP at their leizure. If they do, this most definitely a bad trade deal. If they don’t, then they’re not restrained by copyright or patent laws.
Trump is right on this issue. TPP will be used as a ‘backdoor’ for China to harm us in future trade.
I highly recommend that your author dig a little deeper into this issue. Look for articles that were published pre-debate. You’ll see that he’s not making it up.
No one knows the specifics of the TPP.
No one in Congress.
Not lazy @ss Obama.
Not even John Kerry.
The author states that the person who claims that TPP was their greatest achievement, Hillary Clinton, has now come against it for “political” reasons.
The author also does not state that China COULD become a part of the agreement at any time, they are in no way locked out of it.
If the idiots in DC could not be bothered to read a 2,000 page Obamacare bill, they sure as heck did not read this 6,000 page bill.
Although Paul is technically correct, it is a myopic point that has no bearing on the big picture.

Trump never gets specific about much of anything, but you can bet his staff is working furiously on a position paper to give to Trump for the stump on the TPP...

You must be the most ignorant, ill informed, person on this forum to not know that Trump has several position papers out on his vision to “Make America Great Again.” If I give you a quarter, will you buy yourself a clue?
For Trump, and for many of his supporters, knowledge and facts are not all that important. Trump will hire people who know the things he doesn’t know. It should be helpful for the economy and lower our unemployment rate.
I was specifically referring to the TPP.
Other than what he said during the debate which was pretty much just that it was a bad deal, he had few if any specifics. I wish they had stayed on the topic.

There were many critical things Trump could have said about the 1,000 page agreement. What he chose to focused on, the absence of any provisions to deal with currency manipulation, was completely valid. How this damages Trump’s reputation as a great businessman and wheeler dealer, is only ‘evident’ to the irrational and confused mind of Cincinatus’ Wife.
Oh, let’s not assume anything - it is fact and you admitted it. I’m so glad you prefer Kasich, Bush and Rubio - all amnesty lovers - I guess I’ll assume that as well. Or perhaps I can assume you also like Carly who wants to get us into WWIII. Naw, we wan’t assume - if Trump - in your opinion, was the only lightweight, then I’ll assume you are a GOPE lover. Cruz had a misstep as did Carson and Paul - not one came out perfect - so, let’s not assume that anyone did.

You've put your trust in someone who has championed and supported the Democratic Party leadership (still on the Hill) that has served Obama and Clinton well and faithfully for the last 2 terms (and Trump's support for liberal policies are not things of the past).
Since he tells you that he can do what you want, you want to believe - he's a good salesman and you are not a discerning voter.
