Your base point is correct. Hispanics are not monolithic. Mexicans alone have 3 distinct groups.
PAN (bread) is the party of devout Catholics and small businessmen, the Republican Party of Mexico. It had the presidency 12 years with Fox and Calderon. PAN lost because Calderon acted too aggressively on social conservative issues.
PRI (Institutionalized Revolution Party) is corrupt Chicago Democrats, the party of bribes, corporatism, government employees. It now has the presidency and had it for 70 years before Fox.
PRD (Occupy Wallstreet) is intelligentsia and unions. It holds the balance of power in the Mexican Congress and uses it to leverage more for itself than its size would justify.
These types of Mexicans are well portrayed in the Hollywood movie FOR GREATER GLORY. Get the DVD. The movie hero (Andy Garcia) is a Fox like Rand Paul libertarian. The emotional hero is a Calderon like angry Santorum.
The Marxist revolutionary bad guy is PRI and exemplifies why PRD split off from the corrupt PRI.
