R.I.P.

Isn’t that the third famous drummer this month to go to the Big Stage in the Sky?

Not a fifth Beatle. Session work doesn’t get you a band credit.

I’ve walked away from some opportunities that ended up leaving me broken hearted.

how does one get over being thisclose to being part of the most successful and famous rock band ever?

My husband had a record contract back in the 70s and one of the wives of the other members did not want her husband to go so it fell through.

I say to you and my husband, at least you got to live your dream. At least he is a great drummer and persued such.

So, that heartbreak may have turned into something worse.

Count your blessings! XO

I don’t think he was every very close to actually being a member of the band. He would have been 32 at the time of the “Love Me Do” sessions - positively ancient from the perspective of John, Paul and George. Even manager Brian Epstein was younger.

It never would have worked out.

I was just reading the story of Donald Sutherland’s contract for the film Animal House. Even though he was not a huge part of the final version of the film, getting him onboard to do the film was critical to producer and studio support. He was offered $35k and wanted $50k. The producers offered him $35k and 20% of the gross. He ended up taking $45k and none of the gross. That $10K cost him about $20M in foregone income. So, there I regret, and there is REGRET.

I'm wearing out the soundtrack CD. Someone put a whole lot of thought and effort into producing songs that sound EXACTLY like they were recorded in 1964.

The Beatles (WIKI)

In September 1962, White received a call from Ron Richards asking him to attend a Beatles recording session at the EMI Studios at Abbey Road in London. Richards was record producer George Martin’s assistant at the time and had used White in the past.

The Beatles had recorded “Love Me Do” twice already: at an EMI audition on 6 June 1962 with Pete Best on drums when he was still a member of the group; and again on 4 September 1962 with Ringo Starr on drums, Starr having replaced Best the previous month.[7] Martin had disapproved of Best’s drumming and was now also unhappy with newcomer Starr’s drumming.

On 11 September 1962 Richards, who was in charge of recording that day, wanted the song recorded again, and the Beatles played “Love Me Do” a third time, this time with White replacing Starr on drums and Starr relegated to playing tambourine. “P.S. I Love You” was also recorded during this session with White playing a “lightweight cha-cha-chá beat”[9] and Starr playing maracas. White says he was paid £5 for the session and 10/- (50p) for bringing his drum kit, and did not earn any royalties from the sale of the records.

The version of “Love Me Do” with Starr playing drums was used on the early British pressings of the single in 1962. The version with White playing drums was used on the first American pressings of the single in 1964, all later releases of the single, on the Beatles’ debut British album, Please Please Me, in 1963, and most subsequent albums that included the song.

The version with Starr on drums has also been reissued on occasion; it appeared on the Rarities (1980) compilation, which was released in North America, and received worldwide release on the Past Masters compilation in 1988. A 1992 single included both the Starr and White versions. An easy way to distinguish between the two versions is that White’s version features Starr on tambourine; Starr’s version does not include a tambourine.[10] The Pete Best version of the song, initially thought to be lost, was released for the first time on Anthology 1 (1995). “P.S. I Love You”, with White drumming, was released on the “B” side of the “Love Me Do” single, and on the Please Please Me album.

In a 2012 BBC interview, White claimed that during 11 September session he also played on a recording of “Please Please Me” and this performance was used on the hit single: “From the drum sound I can tell that I was on it, because it was a vastly different sound to Ringo’s drumset at that time. This was before he got the Ludwig kit. Each drummer gets an individual sound, first of all by the way they tune the drums and then by the way they play the drums.”

This was the only time White played with the Beatles, but it was enough to get him “into the history books”,[1] and the distinction of being one of the so-called “fifth Beatles”.[4] White said that on that day in the studio the only members of the Beatles he worked with were Paul McCartney and John Lennon, because they were the songwriters. “They didn’t use any written music, and what I had to do was play the routines with them to get an idea what they wanted before we could even start recording.”

The music industry is a really tough business. Its all about luck and timing more than talent. One of my best friend’s husband was in the Charlie Daniel’s band. He left the band at one point and put together his own band. He was very talented in singing and writing. He even had a record contract and cut record but I think the manager stole all the money and he just never really made the cut to the bigtime.

My ex husband was the lead singer in one of the biggest bands in VA and toured with Hendrix, Beach Boys, Doors, and Almand Bros. Super talented but just never could make it to the bigtime. So he quit the business and moved to Fla no forwarding address and about a year later somebody told him Earth Wind and Fire had been trying to contact him because they needed a new lead singer. They couldn’t find him.

It took him 15 years or more to get to the point where he could be a regular person and work in a normal job. How do you go from being on a stage with thousands of applauding fans and screaming women to being a real estate broker? It ruins people’s lives all the time.

I thought Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow was The Fifth Beatle.

Or was that Murray the K?

It’s a heartbreaking industry.

i live in nyc where every waiter, waitress, host, hostess, nighttime receptionist, etc., is a singer, dancer, actor or comedian.

it’s heartbreaking.

your friend’s husband sounds like he head real talent. what a shame.

my nephew is slowly letting go of the dream at 27.

His father died several years ago so i’m the substitute.

i told him it’s time to start letting go.

he’s got a gal. they moved to NC, and you know the rest of the story :)
