Japan's first commercial passenger plane in half a century made its maiden flight on Wednesday, in a breakthrough for the country's long-held ambition to establish an aircraft industry able to challenge some of the major players in global aviation.
The Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) successfully completed a 1.5-hour return flight from Nagoya Airport to test Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp's ability to bring the 100-seat class plane into service after three years of delays.
The unit of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (7011.T), which built the World War Two-era Zero fighter, is hoping the $47-million regional jet will help it oust Canada's Bombardier Inc (BBDb.TO) as the world's second-biggest maker of smaller passenger jets behind Brazil's Embraer SA (EMBR3.SA).

Go Japan !
Mitsubishi hopes the Banzai 12/7 MKJ will be a success.
Does that plane go into a forced left turn when that engine hits 100% power?/s
lol.
I think there was a picture of it taking off, too.
Cool stuff. Guess they can change pylons and take up whatever engine they want to test.
Looks like a really cool garbage disposal. Just open the door and throw out those scraps........
I prefer the Clarkman
It’s fairly close to the centerline of the airplane. I’d guess the left turning tendency wouldn’t be too severe. Just a rudder tap away from normal.
Howeever, many have said that the Sukhoi SuperJet 100 (SSJ-100) has better sales prospects, mostly due to its wider fuselage, which reduces the claustrophobic feel you get with regional airliners. I wouldn't be surprised that the Russians are looking for a place to assemble the SSJ-100 outside of Russia so production can keep up with customer demand.
“While it’s an interesting design, the plane is in direct competition with the Bombardier C-Series, Embraer E-Jets and the Sukhoi SuperJet (SSJ) 100.”
Being that Pratt and Whitney, Boeing, probably other U.S. suppliers, are highly involved in building this aircraft I might consider flying in it. But the Sukhoi? No thanks, nothing Russian for me.
That’s pretty clever.
Isn’t that the new engine for Gulfstream’s G500 and G600 bizjets?
I hope their modern aircraft dont suck as badly as Mitsubishi cars. What a piece of junk...they are almost as bad as GMs but with better looks.
Last place I worked bought 2 new Mitsubishi forklifts. Both were plagued with numerous electrical gremlins.
Photocopiers from Rank Zerox
Cameras from the Germans
Film from Kodak
Motorcycles from the British
Cars from the US
and have been trying to muscle into the airline business for half a century
My guess is that the The Mitsubishi Regional Jet will enter the museum of Japan aerospace.
My Mitsubishi Mighty Max pickup truck lasted me 10 years.
Cost $7995 off the lot.
