Don’t Mess With the French Military

Here's how to put the scale of Islamic State's attacks into perspective. Within a span of few weeks, the radical Islamist group carried out the deadliest terror attack in modern French history, killing 129 people, and the deadliest attack in modern Turkish history--the Oct. 10 Ankara bombing, which killed 102.

Between the two, I.S. blew up a Russian passenger jet over the Sinai, killing 224. Another 44 people died in suicide blasts in a Hezbollah-controlled Beirut neighborhood, the worst terror attack in the city since the end of the Lebanese civil war. A drumbeat of suicide bombings in Baghdad killed dozens.

In other words, Islamic State has launched a war on the civilian populations of all its major adversaries--NATO, Russia, Iraq and an Iranian ally.

A day after the Paris bloodbath, French Pres. Francois Hollande called the murders "an act of war that was committed by a terrorist army, a jihadist army, Daesh, against France." French Prime Minister Manuel Valls vowed to "annihilate the enemies of the republic."

All of Islamic State's enemies will likely strike back hard. But don't underestimate France. Its military has been one of the most aggressive in battling Islamist groups from Mali to Afghanistan.

France has been at war with Islamic State since September 2014 under the name Operation Chammal. Paris can call on the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle--due to arrive Nov. 18 near the Middle East to support the war--and her assortment of Rafale and Super Etendard strike aircraft. A French two-star general is also attached to U.S. Central Command.

The French have a long way to go to prove that they can fight and fight well.

The only modern military legacy they have is Napoleon and Marshall Petain at Verdun in WWI.

We must give the frogs credit though, they are showing more balls and leadership than the Eunuch in the White House over the last 7 years...

Leave it to the French to bomb 20 targets already deserted because of Russian attacks

Oh wait, the Pentagon and john Francoise Kerry told us the Russians aren't attacking ISIS .....

The same French military that pulled out after the Beirut bombings?

Look, there are elements of the French defense that are very good. The Foreign Legion, their intelligence. But France's "military" has not instilled much confidence recently. In the Gulf War they were given a ceremonial flanking role. They didn't participate in Iraq. And honestly, I don't know what they've done of note in Afghanistan, if anything. A few air strikes do not constitute military superiority over anyone. I will be the first to congratulate them, though, when they win some big victories.

Don’t sell the French short. Trust me. If they want to, they can kick some SERIOUS ass.

The French have been fighting the mahamits for over 1500 years. Charles the Hammer (Charles Martel) saved Europe form the invading Barbarians. The Crusades also pushed them back.

Why do we not just call them what they are, not ISIS, ISIL, not AL queda not radical islamists, they are moslems, simply put, moslem.

Agree. Their soldiers and airmen are good. The French problem is the same as ours: a political class consisting primarily of low intelligence failures doing the only job that will accept them.

The same frogs that refused overflights of France when we went to Bomb Libya.

Good memory. Absolutely. Same “militaristic” French that wouldn’t help in Iraq.

Yep. And this may be a chance for them to regain the pride they lost in WWII.

The French need to go back to being like the French in “The Day of the Jackal”, with the telephone-generator inquisition ...

that might get some results ...

France is responding by adding jets to already planned US sorties. Also, we are giving France the target lists. So far, the strikes by France have been mostly symbolic.
