SEOUL, Nov. 18 (Yonhap) -- Police said Wednesday they are questioning an illegal immigrant with Indonesian nationality who is suspected of following a terrorist group affiliated with al-Qaida.
The National Police Agency (NPA) said they arrested the 32-year-old at his house in South Chungcheong Province on charges of violating the Immigration Control Law and forging documents.
However, the man is also suspected of supporting the al-Nusra Front, the Syrian branch of al-Qaida, for months, according to police.
Police said the suspect came to South Korea on a forged passport in 2007 and that they found and confiscated a bowie knife, a model of an M16 rifle and a number of books on Islam fundamentalism at his home.
He was found to have uploaded a video clip of himself waving the terrorist group's flag at a local mountain on social media in April.
A photo of him wearing a cap with the group's logo on it while at Gyeongbok Palace, an ancient palace and one of the hottest tourist destinations in downtown Seoul, was also uploaded last month, according to the police.
The police said they will continue the investigation to find out whether the suspect has accomplices who also sympathize with and support terrorism.
Earlier on Wednesday, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) said in a parliamentary report that there are a dozen people in South Korea who have publicly expressed support for the Islamic State, which has claimed responsibility for the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.
Since 2010, a total of 48 foreigners who were either affiliated with international terrorist groups or appointed security risks have been arrested and deported, Lee Byong-ho, the head of the NIS, was quoted as saying.
One of them, also Indonesian, is known to have died after joining the Islamic State, according to the NIS.
From January to September, 200 Syrian refugees have arrived in South Korea, according to the report.
Within that period, 135 have received a 1-year humanitarian stay permit, a status that allows its holder to legally work in the country and can be renewed, though no social insurance coverage is provided. The Ministry of Justice is still screening them to see if they can stay here longer, said the lawmakers who quoted the NIS chief.
Up till September, a total of 848 Syrians have requested refugee status and 14 among them are still at the airport, waiting for their turn to be evaluated, the ministry said.

I don't know many people who think South Korean jails are nice places, or that the interrogators are nice people.
This man won't get treated the way he would in Riyadh, Tehran or Baghdad, let alone by ISIS in Raqqah, but it sure won't go well for him, and will be much worse than Gitmo.
