I was wondering that too but thought I might sound critical and the woman died to save her son.
I told myself that there are different parenting styles and she could have just left him alone as some have done.

61-yr-old grandma was there, too (and, unfortunately, she also died in the shooting.)
Mom’s actions were heroic, but it did strike me as odd that the 5-yr-old (or the 61-yr-old) would be there.
