Erdogan most likely does not desire to be Caliph. He might well hanker to be the Sultan. The Caliph only ruled in the first century. From thence he was the authority of religion and what he said went in that area. The Sultan ruled the geography and the society and the presence of the Caliph protected the sultan from attack a little bit. There was always a bit of implication that the Caliph was the hostage of the Sultan and it was not unknown for a sultan to depose a Caliph the Islamic way i.e. by strangling him or, in Mameluke Cairo, by halving him..

Oil, it’s all about oil and below market prices. Russia is positioning itself to eventually control all the oil, but right now, they are all buying oil from Iraq and ISIS, including Assad,. Assad is buying oil from ISIS.
If they wanted to cut ISIS off att the knees they would bomb the oil fields and cut off their funding. Europe, Russia, Turkey, Syria, all want below market oil and Obama wants cheap oil to hurt the US oil industry.
Today Putin said that Turkey is protecting ISIS oil because Turkey has made a dal with ISIS to buy the oil.
That is the same thing that I have been saying for weeks. The chaos in the Middle Eadt is all about the oil. It has even been posited hat Obama had a dal with the Saudis to lower the price of oil my glutting the market but the Saufis could not be expected to carry the burden long term, so the Iranians offered a dal to Europe and Russia for cheap oil and ISIS got into the game by stealing the Iraqi oil.
