17 Oklahoma earthquakes of 2.6 magnitude or greater recorded since Thursday's 4.7

Three earthquakes of 3.0 magnitude or greater shook an area just northwest of Medford in Grant County within a 15-minute time period Thursday evening.

The first and biggest of the three, a 4.1 magnitude temblor, hit at 4:40 p.m. and could be felt as far as the Tulsa area to the east and Wichita, Kansas, to the north, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The measurement initially went out as a 4.6 magnitude quake, but was quickly amended to 4.1 on the Geological Survey's website.

Two more earthquakes followed from the same area between 8 to 9 miles northwest of Medford. A 3.1 magnitude quake hit at 4:53 p.m., followed by a 3.9 quake two minutes later. About 45 miles to the southwest near Helena, another quake erupted at 5:09 p.m., this time with a 3.3 magnitude. The quake was recorded about 7 miles northwest of Helena. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission announced Friday plans to shut off four disposal wells within 3 miles of the earthquake activity near Crescent on Thursday. Two quakes were recorded, one of which was a magnitude 4.0.

The plan also called for a 50 percent volume reduction at seven Arbuckle disposal wells. Operators at other nearby wells also were put on notice to be prepared for possible changes in operation.

A 4.7 magnitude Oklahoma earthquake Thursday -- the largest recorded in the state since 2011 -- caused the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to shut down or reduce capacity at 25 disposal wells.

However, the state's quake activity has continued since that milestone temblor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS recorded 17 Oklahoma earthquakes since the 4.7, including a 4.0 magnitude near Crescent, and the 4.1 magnitude near Medford. The quakes recorded as low as 2.6 magnitude (two Thursday near Cherokee and Medford), but also include six recorded earlier today:

- 2.7 magnitude 6:07 a.m. about 9 miles south-southwest of Cherokee

- 2.8 magnitude 9:42 a.m. about 15 miles north-northwest of Fairview

- 3.1 magnitude 3:11 p.m. about 15 miles east of Cherokee

- 3.2 magnitude 2:06 a.m. about 18 miles north-northwest of Fairview

- 3.5 magnitude 12:12 a.m. about 9 miles southwest of Cherokee

- 3.5 magnitude 5:22 a.m. about 9 miles southwest of Cherokee.

Here’s the kicker sentence.

“However, the state’s quake activity has continued since that milestone temblor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.”

It’s not hydraulic fracturing that’s been going on since the 1930s that’s causing the problem. It’s something much bigger that is not our fault.

The quakes stretch from southern Kansas to northern Texas.

Related or not, I thought I read that they were shutting down some deep dump waste wells. Despite the evidence, the frickin’ anti frackers are still whining about the well/erf quake connection. And here I thought the quakes were because of that millions of degrees magma caused by glow-bull discombobulation was the culprit.

Is that area a fault zone?

Yeah, even if it is fracking, then GTHO of the State if you fear 3.0 earthquakes. Plus, they don’t complain about man-made tornadoes, do they?

Global warming, caused by fracking.

Yes. Nemama Uplift runs north and south through that area.

There are many injection-well quakes every day from “the Geysers” geothermal plant in Northern California. I don’t ever remember reading libs getting hysterical over those.

My favorite New Madrid earthquake story is about President Jefferson’s nephews (they may have been his wife’s nephews). The December 16, 1811 quake happened and his chimney fell down. One of the brother’s got angry with a slave for breaking his mother’s pot and killed him on December 16. had his other slaves wall the body up in the newly constructed chimney. On January 23, 1812 the next big quake happened and the chimney fell down again exposing the body. He and his brother fled but were caught. I think they committed suicide after being convicted.

Here’s the Wiki link:

Perhaps it could be legislated into a “no fault zone.”

Related or not, I thought I read that they were shutting down some deep dump waste wells.

On the Kansas side, they have shut down some of the deep dump waste wells. They use these wells to dispose of the massive amounts of salt water released by the fracking. The fracking process itself is not being blamed by some for the earthquakes, but rather the subsequent salt water disposal action.

So even though some of these disposal wells have been shut down (as well as the nearby oil production), the earthquakes continue. The 4.1 woke me up at about 1:40AM, as the bed was shaking very noticeably. My cats were awakened as well and had frightened looks on their faces.

Correct. I went to boarding school there in my teens (I am retirement age). We had little tremblers ALL the time. We made jokes about them in the dorm - sophomoric humor - and learned not to put breakable items on top of the chest of drawers.

There have been clusters of earthquakes in NW Dallas County, near the old Texas Stadium site in Irving, for months now.

There are few wells and little drilling in Dallas County.

However, the spot of the quakes is near the confluence of several faults, but the anti-drilling zealots conveniently ignore that.

It’s like global warming: man’s egotism yearns to take credit for everything that happens. It’s hard to admit that there are forces that predate us and that are out of our control.

Why this is news is baffling.

In the Bay area of CA, they record hundreds of <3 every week and always have.
