Nice article. It's nice to see new hunters. New female hunters. And new hunters in the media.
I saw the deer moving toward us, her backside down sounds like a gut shot, but there's no telling and all ended well.
The only time we had steak was when deer season came around. I never had a store steak until I was 12....1956.
HM-M-M-M-M. Bambi.
I can only imagine how many death threats she’s gotten by now from the regressives.
My son got his first deer ever Friday afternoon, dressed 62#. Yesterday he got his second one, about 110# with hide and hoof. Now his head won’t fit through the door, but we won’t need to buy meat for a while.
My first doe was back when I was in my 20’s, and while I’ve been on lots of hunts and deer drives since then, the boys (my brothers, ex and sons) hogged all the action! I’ve always helped with the butchering. Playing, ‘Deer CSI’ is a great way to learn anatomy, LOL!
I’ll be moving to Der Hinterlands this coming year and Beau is an amazing hunter, so I’ll be glad to have my own personal guide so I can re-learn the finer points. Raccoon, deer, rabbit, coyote; I’ll Bear Season, though! :)
Deer in southern Wisconsin are corn and soybean fed and they are DELICIOUS! Come to Wisconsin! Bring your money! Plenty to share! :)
Great story.
There are many more women going into the field. I saw more ladies this year in Nebraska than ever before. That is a good thing.
Like this author, I mainly hunt in areas that need deer population control. That means does. When I started hunting as an adult, many of the older men would scream, threaten, or mock us as we pulled up with a truck load of does to the check station. For them, horns were all that mattered.
For me, it was about protecting the fields of friends and family.
For those who say she was to “PC”, that isn’t a bad thing. The way to preserve our rights is to make them non partisan. If you can get liberals to value the same things as conservatives, you win. If you can get liberal women to view hunting as a good thing, you win even more.
So I say to DEIRDRE FLEMING, good shot. Enjoy your meat, and see you in the field next year.
