The Turkish military has released an audio recording of what it says were warnings to a Russian warplane before it was shot down on the Syrian border.

"Change your heading south immediately," a voice says in English. Turkey said it had tried to rescue the SU-24 bomber's two pilots.

not sure why people cannot get it into their heads that Turkey is propping up ISIS which are out to kill us. Turkey turned their backs on us during the Gulf war too.

You would think we were back in 1985 and the cold war.

"Turkish officials also say they did not know the jet was Russian until they had shot it down."

As in "You have to pass it to know what's in it."

The East European members of NATO are deeply concerned about Putin’s appetite for further territorial conquests. Many of them believe Turkey has the geographical position and military strength needed to win in a confrontation with Putin’s Russia.

While that may be true, Turkey isn't exactly an honest broker. We have to be simultaneously wary of Russian ambitions in Europe and Turkish ambitions in the Near East.

Russia wont do anything to a NATO ally which is why Turkey thought they could get away with it.

I wish they weren’t part of NATO.

They are more a part of ISIS than nato. Or at least turn a major league blind eye to it.

June 2012 interception of Turkish aircraft

Event and aftermath[edit]

On 22 June 2012, Syria shot down the Turkish F-4 Phantom II military jet near the Turkish-Syrian border.[6] The navies of Turkey and Syria then searched for the missing crewmembers,[7] before Turkish personnel recovered their bodies in early July 2012.[8]

United States research vessel EV Nautilus arrived three days later at the crash site to join the search and rescue operations. Her two remotely operated vehicles Hercules and Argus conducted search at the seabed in 1,280 m (4,200 ft) depth and located the debris of the aircraft, and brought parts of the downed jet up to the surface. The bodies of the pilots were elevated on 4 July 2012 with the help of a specially for this purpose constructed device in a 45-minute operation.[9]

The Syrian military alleged that the fighter aircraft had violated Syrian airspace. However, Turkish president Abdullah Gül and other spokesmen have not confirmed this, though Gül said that “it is routine for jet fighters to sometimes fly in and out over [national] borders”.[10]

Gül stated that “it is not possible to cover over a thing like this. Whatever is necessary will no doubt be done.”[11] A Turkish political party leader claimed that the jet had been shot down by a Russian warship, and Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç also claimed that it was hit by a laser-guided or heat-seeking missile, not anti-aircraft fire as the Syrian Government claimed.[12]

On 3 July 2012, the Syrian President responded that he regretted the incident and would not allow any open conflict with Turkey.[1]

On 29 September, alleged secret documents were leaked by the Syrian opposition to Al Arabiya, saying that the two pilots had survived the shoot down, which was done in coordination with the Russian naval facility in Tartus, and were captured but later executed. One of the alleged reports, sent to Syrian Intelligence, reads in part, “Based on information and guidance from the Russian leadership comes a need to eliminate the two Turkish pilots detained by the Special Operations Unit in a natural way and their bodies need to be returned to the crash site in international waters.” It suggests the Syrian government sends a “menacing” message to the Turkish government from the danger it might face in case of any hostile move. The report insists that the Syrian leadership should hasten and make a formal apology to the Turkish government for bringing down the plane, which would embarrass the Turks and win the support of international public opinion. As such, they did apologize.[13]

The change in Turkey’s policy towards Syrian attacks led to a series of border clashes in October.

“Isn’t shooting a pilot descending in a parachute a violation of the Geneva convention laws? Why is Russia not pursuing charging Turkey with war crimes??

Because Turkey didn’t shoot the pilot, this happened in the wild wild west across the border in Syria with rebels.

” “Article 5” specifically covers only “Armed attacks IN Europe or North America”. Turkey is not in Europe — NOT EVEN CLOSE!! and there is ABSOLUTELY NO ARTICLE 5 treaty agreement for attacks TURKEY —NONE!! It would be ILLEGAL!! “

1. Turkey is considered in EurAsia with parts in each continent.

2. The NATO perspective is that Turkey is part of Europe as it is at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. NATO is a serious defense agreement. Russia will do nothing directly to Turkey.

I am just going by GEOGRAPHY!! What a joke. There is no subjective boundary to Europe. Turkey is in the Middle East not in Europe. The Treaty doesn’t say we have to defend the Middle East. ONLY “ EUROPEAN members or North America”!!

Incorrect on several levels.

1. Due a simple google. Parts of Turkey are indeed in Europe.

2. If you think that Turkey, as bad as the recent regime is with Erdogan is, isn’t going to be defended upon attack by NATO, you need to buy a clue. They will be defended as a key geostrategic piece of geography. They are in NATO for a reason.

1.Not a foot of land belongs to Turkey whether in Europe or in Asia Minor. It was conquered in a genocide supported by the Bolsheviks and the West.
2. NATO is a bankrupt obsolete institution that belongs in the filthy dustbins of history. Toss rotten Turkey into the garbage too.

In your fantasyland, Turkey doesn’t exist.
And NATO, which played a huge role in putting the Soviets into the dustbin of history is the one in the dustbin.

That’s some funny chit right there.

I’m going to have to ignore your preeminent expertise in international treaty law and just go with what the people at NATO say, that they will defend Turkey if attacked.

“”NATO is ready and able to defend all allies, including Turkey against any threats,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters as he arrived for the meeting.”
