Russia announced Friday that it will suspend visa-free travel with Turkey amid the escalating spat over the downing of a Russian warplane by a Turkish fighter jet at the Syrian border.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that Moscow will halt the existing visa-free regime starting Jan. 1, saying that Turkey has become a conduit for terrorists and has been reluctant to share information with Moscow about Russian citizens accused of involvement in terrorist activities.

Turkey's downing of the Russian military jet Tuesday, the first time in half a century that a NATO member shot down a Russian plane, has drawn a harsh response from Moscow. Russia has since restricted tourist travel, left Turkish trucks stranded at the border, confiscated large quantities of Turkish food imports and started preparing a raft of broader economic sanctions.

Taking orders from Obama was a really stupid move on Turkey’s part. It’ll gets much worse from them. Bet the rent.

I watched a snow last night with that Bourdain guy. He was in Turkey. They mentioned how much they rely on Russia for money.

The Turks may want to consider that the tough-minded Putin will give many of them a visa=-free trip - to he moon, or at least sky-high.

Don't worry, "Turkey is a NATO ally."

It's pretty clear Turkey is supporting ISIS and Obama is supporting them both, giving Turkey information on Russian flight operations timing/locations.

the Turks bet on Obama and lost. Now they can deal with a furious Putin and Russia. Shooting down that plane was an extremely poor decision that will have ramifications for a long time. How to get out of this mess? The Turks could pay off the Russian pilot’s families, apologize for their mistake and start working with their allies to stop ISIS. Maybe then Putin would have a little mercy on them.

Interestingly, one of Obama's tactics intended to install the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt using "Arab Spring", was to wreck the considerable Egyptian tourist industry.

Apparently two can play that game.

I would venture to guess that the money Erdogan is worried about is the US taxpayer funds directed into his own pocket by Obama.

At this point, Russia can't be bought.

Easy solution is to destroy the places they store weapons — mosques.

Disagree, Putin has become a very wealthy man somehow but I don’t think the Turks have enough money to buy him off at the moment. This is too important to his popularity to let it go for now. The worrisome fact is could we substitute Franz Joseph and his wife for that Russian plane? Is history trying to repeat itself?
