Three or four years ago, an old boyfriend gave me a gun for self protection.

The only thing is; I’m afraid of it. (Stupid. I know)
Growing up in Texas, my father gave me a 22 rifle and I was never afraid of it, but somehow the pistol frightens me.
It needs cleaning badly, but I haven’t touched it in all these years. I guess I’m afraid it will go off or something.
I wouldn’t know the first thing about cleaning it anyway.

If somebody got after me, and I fired it, would it explode or something for having not been cleaned?
I feel safer having it around, and I guess I’m hoping if somebody got after me I could frighten them off by just pointing it at them. :)

.

Find a friendly local gunshop with a gun range, and take the gun down there. Someone there will clean it for you and will be happy to train you how to use it. And, no, the gun would not blow up if you tried to use it...

Not knowing what kind of pistol (revolver or semiauto), I couldn’t help you.
If you can find the make and model, look up on YouTube how to clean.
If you can’t, try to post a picture of it on this thread, and I’ll try to tell you what kind, and find a video for you when I get home from work in about an hour.

Go down to the nearest gun store and ask for help. I’m sure they can recommend an instructor (and sell you the needed cleaning kit and materials). You might also check out on-line videos for generic cleaning instructions, and perhaps even for your specific make/model.

A quick check of Youtube with the AR-15 as “the gun to be cleaned” turns up several videos.

Is your handgun a revolver or a semi-auto??

If you are that afraid of the gun, you need to get rid of it, or overcome your fear and learn how to maintain and operate it safely.

Don’t rely on scaring assailants away by pointing the gun at them. That will get you killed.

Try it out first on a possum, raccon, tree rat ot cute little bunny. I have a mop, vaccue cleaner and a broom in the laundry room that my old wife left in my house yeas ago. They are old and dirty. My mom had those also but I didn’t take the time or effort to learn anything while I was around Her. I’m unsure if they are dangerous or what to do with them. Instead of looking at them as simple tools, I will apply irrational fears to them and act illogical towards them. What should I do?
