There are no more white cab drivers in NYC. The New York Times reported earlier this year that only 6 percent of yellow cab drivers are even American-born. So when Leon and other blacks are not getting picked up, the drivers passing them by are not white racists. They are mostly Indian and/or Pakistani men (and a very few women) -- men of color. What gives?
I happened to be in a cab driven by a black man from Senegal... this cabbie went off on his own racist rant about the difference between American blacks and those from other countries. He claimed he could tell from half a block away whether someone was an American black or not, and he said he made it a point to try never to pick up American blacks.

I hear this from my African-born friends, as well. "When I want to get something done, I look for a white person."
You want to pi** off an African? Call someone an African American, the African will quickly tell you that there is nothing at all African about this particular group of black Americans.
Yeah, and you know what’s funny? Sometimes a white guy in a jacket can’t get a bus to stop for him, either.
A mideastern cabbie once said to me, as he tapped the plexiglass and metal divider between the front seat and the back: "This is for The Blacks. No, really. That's the only reason we have it is for The Blacks."
Tipping is the issue surely.
Bigger dirty little secret: American black cab drivers don't like picking up American black passengers.
If blacks don’t like to be judged negatively, maybe they should clean up their act.
Blacks rarely tip.
Friend of mine is a waitress. Blacks tip $2 on average per head, regardless of the cost of the meal. They are also prone to complain about something about the meal or service (b.s.) to justify not leaving a tip.
Cabbies combine that with the risk of getting robbed... and drive on.
Denny’s was sued and settled a ‘discrimination suit’ over this. Waitresses making $2 an hour didn’t want to work for nothing. Racists!
This is an example of post-judice.
Pre-judice is judging people based on race without reference to experience.
Post-judice is making judgments based on life experience.
I’ve actually seen blacks justifying whites being robbed for being in the ‘wrong neighborhood.’
Also funny is if you ask blacks if Arabs getting on planes should be racially profiled. They have no problem with that.
Remind me to never take cab in NYC.
A bunch of foreigners probably know less about the city than I do.

An exercise in illogic by Paul LaRosa.In his mind there is only racism. In reality there is a separate criterion of decision motive: discrimination based on experience.
Poor Leon can’t catch a break because his appearance causes rational people to classify him as high risk.
As Thomas Sowell might say, it is a cost of knowledge problem. The cost of picking up the wrong passenger being high to exorbitant, the cabbie elects for self-preservation. The lost value of what would in fact have been a good fare just doesn’t balance the scales.
If in Paul LaRosa’s world black Senegalese are “racist” toward American blacks, the word “racist” does not mean what Mr. LaRosa thinks it does.
The obvious solution is for Leon, and Paul LaRosa, to drive cabs and pick up enough American blacks to learn the ropes. If they survive and flourish, because their passengers are appreciative of the consideration they are given, then their viewpoint would seem to have validity. But maybe they should put their toe in the water using Uber to reduce the cost of knowledge first.
As you say, it's not all of them. But it's enough of them.
When I am in Chicago I stop and get a bulk bag of Godiva chocolates. I give two or three of these with my tip. After that they will remember you and go out of their way to help you. One of the things I hear after this is “Let me get the door for you candy man”. It is a cheap and easy way to show appreciation for good service and to get better service latter on.
We’ve heard blacks and white liberals proclaim white men are racists just for being white. So, F’em. I am a racist and hold them in complete contempt. Besides, it wasn’t my race that voted 97% for Obama simply because he was a black man.
Obviously nonwhites have a comparative advantage. Possibly because whites are too easy a target of charges of racism, and have to choose between picking up riskier passengers than everyone else will, and leaving the profession.
Back in the early 70s when I was working for DOD we had an exchange program where German engineers would come to the USA and work for a year
The one in our divison told me that because of the American Movies TV Papers etc that he saw and read in Germany he thought white Americans were racist
Then he said I am only here 3 months and I have become racist
On a recent business trip to Atlanta, my cab got stuck in traffic for an hour. The cabbie and dispatcher were conversing in a foreign language, and the driver informed me that it was Ethiopian. He said he came to this country four years ago and was already a citizen. What a land of opportunity this was. He had a job waiting for him when he arrived because, as he proudly informed me, Ethiopians always hire one another.
I asked whether any native-born Americans drove cabs in Atlanta. He told me that out of 1200 cabbies, only 3 or 4 were Americans. “Americans are no good, “ he said. “We are better workers.” He made no attempt to conceal that Ethiopians favored their own kind over native-born Americans.
I asked the cab driver whether he had a favorite presidential candidate. “Rubio’s my guy,” he told me. “He’s the friend of immigrants. I have many friends and family in Ethiopia who want to come. Rubio’s our guy.” I asked what he would do if the election came down to Trump and Clinton. “Trump is very bad,” he said. So would he vote for Clinton? He said he would never vote for a woman, he would not vote at all if it came to that.
