We live in a world of short-term memories and long-term memory deficiencies. If the 24-hour news cycle was any indication, Americans appear to be bouncing from one catastrophic mass shooting to the next, with hardly any breathing room. Like this is just a regular occurrence America has learned to endure because… guns. It’s the prevalence of firearms in the hands of the people, the anti-gunners say. Calls to limit, rewrite, redefine, or outright dispose of the 2nd Amendment are rampant.

But no one is looking at the data. If they did, they would realize something is really, really, really wrong here.

No, there haven’t always been so many mass shootings. It hasn’t always been this way. Mass shootings have skyrocketed in this country just in the last seven years under President Obama

A lot of these places those are still pretty low numbers. Especially when you compare to the 80s and early 90s. Violent crime is on a bit of an up tick in recent years but it’s still down from 20+ years ago.

Reminds me of the concentration camp victims who did not believe anything bad would happen and thought Hitler was a reasonable man. It was not until they stepped foot in the gas chambers that they realized something was very wrong.

Chicago is down, actually down a LOT recently:
http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/May-2014/Chicago-crime-rates/ (there’s a graph about 1/4 of the way down).

Baltimore is basically wallowing. It’s always been a mess.

It is my understanding that Chicago has at least had 10 killings per weekend this year and that is way over the top. Even this article you site casts some doubt in the accuracy of the figures.

It’s because he’s been so lax on climate change.

When it’s warm, people enjoy going out of their homes and working. Especially in factories. So the people in the gun factories work more. And more guns are made. And, therefore, more guns are delivered to stores and sold. And more people now have guns. And...well, you know the rest.

It’s a big city, with a rough history. There’s also probably the question of Chicago vs Chicagoland (greater metro area). But still, in general violent crime rates are down in this country. Gamers are very familiar with the “Doom graph” which shows the beginning of a serious drop in violent crime rate right around when the first Doom game came out (here’s an old one http://thelibertarianrepublic.com/if-video-games-like-doom-cause-violence-why-is-violent-crime-going-down/ ). There’s a big discussion in various circles on the why’s of that. The rise of violent video games also coincides to the rise in the Broken Windows theory of police enforcement. And the rise of the internet and people just plain having better ways to kill time than killing each other. And in recent years there’s a trend of teenagers being a lot less interested in “gateway” behaviors like driving (driving gets you away from parents and authority figures and enables all that bad stuff we used to do).

Oh yeah and that 'politically convenient' shooting at a PLANNED PARENTHOOD CLINIC? Yeah right give me a freakin' BREAK!!!

Given all the attention on details of the San Bernardino assault, how come I'm not seeing anything on the "planned Parenthood shootings" except that there was a shooting and PP was on the scene ?

In addition to that, all but one or two mass shootings were perpetrated by individuals who were or rec3ently had been taking behavior modification drugs such as Prozac.

The increase in this type of shooting has increased, no doubt, but so has social unrest in general, and it was happening before Obama came along.

Mass shootings were almost non existent not so long ago. It has been happening more frequently in the past few years though.

I think a number of things are contributing. The economy is a big part of it. Everything you can thin of has doubled in price since Obama was elected. Gas went down, but he had nothing to do with that. and prices are still rising, even though shipping cost has decreased along with cheaper gas.

I checked a while back, gas was $1.78 when Obama was elected. Before he was re elected it was over $4. Before that it took over 20 years for gas to double in price. Same for everything else. Literally everything has doubled in price in 7 years or less, and those prices had taken over 20 years to double before that.

In addition morals and values have declined alarmingly. In 1961 MLK said

We represent 10% of the population and 58% of the crime.

speaking to the black community. He went on to say that they needed to work on their morals and values. ( I can’t remember the exact quote ) Great advice for everyone, not just blacks. And America in general has done the exact opposite. It’s gotten so bad that now gay marriage is considered the normal, to some, you can’t spank your kid because he can have you arrested, even if the little urchin deserves it, a young lady not long ago sued her parents to pay for her college education after she left home and had nothing to do with them...and won I think...

Political correctness is being used as a tool to shut up anyone who has an opposing opinion, the so called news sensationalizes any story that can be seen as racially based and ignores those that indicate otherwise, the same for police shootings and gang violence.

Let a white cop shoot a black thug, justified or not, and the news is all over it but over 300 shootings in Chicago, usually gang related and black on black, are mostly ignored.

Along with the previously mentioned price increases, overall salaries have declined by $1400 to $3000 a year under Obama, depending on who you listen to. Unemployment is still very high, even though Obama had the Labor dept change the way they figure it to give the appearance of lower unemployment. No longer are people considered unemployed if their unemployment runs out but they are still looking for a job, no longer are they counted if they take a part time job and cross their fingers hoping something better comes along. I’ve heard estimates that the actual number is more like 18% rather than the 5% claimed by Obama.

Education is going down the tubes, we’ve been dropping in world wide ratings for years, and it’s not getting any better. Now Congress wants to bring back “ no child left behind”. Bad idea. I did computer repairs for several teachers in Louisiana, they told me they were required to let kids go to the next grade even if they failed and should have been held back. So a kid who sits there and does absolutely nothing in class can get a diploma same as the valedictorian...who probably can’t spell either...I see that online daily, even in news articles that are supposedly being proofread by an editor.

Discipline is non existent in schools and homes, and we’re suffering for it. I think TV and video games are having an effect too. Kids see so much violence on TV, video games and movies, I’m not sure they actually realize that in real life people feel pain when the bullets hit. I don’t think the fully realize the bullets are actually real, the person shot won’t be back next week in another movie. I’m not really sure they can separate fantasy from reality any more.

Attention spans are limited to 140 characters. Verbal communication is disappearing. Text messaging is the modern mode of choice. That has detrimental consequences. You can’t hear the humor or concern in a person’s voice in a text message. I’ve even seen kids sitting in the same damn room texting each other rather then talking. HUH????

I’ve been more of an observer most of my life than anything else, for reasons I won’t go into here. I hated school so I continued to educate myself rather then trying to go to college, even though I could have, courtesy of the military. (they tried their best to get me to go officer, they don’t like to let an IQ of 150 get away) I hated school, no way was I going to another one.

So I’ve seen, over the past 50 years, a serious decline in morals and values. I’ve seen in the past 5 or 6 years, a serious state of unrest and uncertainty concerning the future of both the country and the individual.

I’m convinced all of this, and probably a couple of things I’ve overlooked, are contributing to the increase of mass shootings, and violence in general in the past few years.

The one positive thing I’ve seen, is that the overall crime rate has decreased in the past 20 years, surprisingly enough. Along with a serious increase in gun sales...liberals hate that...

Not only can I not stand to look at him, if I hear his voice I turn off the radio/tv. Every characteristic I find offensive in a human being is found in him.

That’s an easy one.

He signals weakness, moral obfuscation, and impotence with everything he says and does.

Signal weakness and the predators will attack.

“if some doper shot four other dopers....I don’t consider it a mass shooting and would recommend the guy for some medal.”

Ha, ha, I agree. In private, many police officers call these victimless crimes.
