Finland’s residents may be given a monthly income of $868 – for doing nothing

Finland's citizens could soon receive tax-free payouts of roughly $868 a month - just for living in the country.

Proposals being drawn up by the Finnish Social Insurance Institution call for a national basic income that would replace other benefit payments, regardless if the recipient is working or not, The Telegraph reports. It's not clear how Finland would shore up enough cash to make the payouts each year, according to Bloomberg.

Still, government officials say they're trying to encourage more people to return to work. More than 10 percent of Finland's workforce is unemployed, with figures soaring to 22.7 percent among younger workers, according to the Telegraph.

In Finland, the average household net-adjusted disposable income per capita is USD 27 927 a year, more than the OECD average of USD 25 908 a year.

If they abandon all the other social program benefits it may well be that savings from eliminating the administrative overburden, including pensions, pays for new outlays.

If we did that here, with our far greater admin burden, there might be reason to rejoice.

Dumb idea. Super dumb idea if there’s no distinction made between citizens and residents.

“monthly income of $868 - for doing nothing”

Obama can top that. He got a Nobel prize for the same thing.

Honestly, compared to our current system this is better. If it replaces all other benefits and there isn’t a disincentive to work it is a step in the right direction. With the system we have here, you get money for nothing but you lose it if you actually work. Why do we have so many people not working in this country (besides the Obama’s war on business)? A single parent earning $4,800 has about the same take home income as one making $21,000 because of the loss of benefits. I would rather see “here’s $1,000/mo, now go get a job” where they keep the $1,000/mo no matter what they make than “here’s a $1,000/mo, but you’ll lose it if you shovel someone’s sidewalk or try to do something productive to make any more than that.”

Of course that pales besides the average monthly US welfare benefit (all things combined) of $2900 ...

Deindstrialization and robotics are inevitably going to lead to something similar here, I don’t see how it can turn out otherwise, we’re going to have huge numbers of people with no employment prospects no matter how had they try.

My rebuttal would be that simply reducing taxes by XXX dollars per month would be even better because you don’t need to pay the government employees to shuttle the money back and forth at all.

No disrespect intended to those brave freedom fighters of WWII, or the Finnish people in general. Just a statement on how much you can do when you don’t have to protect the free world from nuclear Hell, as the US has been doing for 60 years or so.

True enough. Put Canada in the same category. The money they don’t spend on defense allows for things like baby bonuses and, for what it’s worth, socialized medicine.

Who’s the dummy? Us for paying for the umbrella, us for maintaining an umbrella against a country we should be fighting alongside at the moment, or those who make supplicants out of their citizens? I don’t pretend to know the answer.
