“Nation building” was an absurd policy as executed, and we should have left immediately after the punitive expedition phase.

Arguably, what would have then happened is no less than what is happening today. WWII Japan and Germany were important models. One of the reasons we maintained a post-war presence (and yet do) was to preclude Russia's occupation. The elements match nicely.
My view is we should only involve ourselves if we intend to stay until the region is stabilized. The alternative is to encourage the UN's involvement from the outset.

I was there in 2005. It was a nice airport, nicer than Kabul’s at the time. The US had built it in 50s or 60s, I suppose, around the time the Helmand canal system was put in. That was another dumb US move that has led to some of the world’s most productive poppy growing area.

I spent 10 months at KAF. There really aren’t any Afghani civilians there. So...I don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.

I say get out. We are $20 trillion in primary debt. We have no business in building anyone else’s nation. Bring these troops home and put them on the borders.
Those two examples worked because we completely suppressed and eliminated the opposing ideologies, and stayed to implement acceptable ones.
We were unwilling to do this in the case of Afghanistan.
