In the grand scheme of things, the distinction is small. But it was to impress evangelicals that his evangelical past is much strongeror more familiar.
I don’t see much advantage, but it’s not a dealbreaker. Some voters will think that Donald is the more traditional evangelical for whatever it’s worth.
It would be similar to drawing a distinction with Hillary over who is the real New Yorker.
But again, in the grand scheme, it’s not newsworthy. I don’t think it’s going to change Cruz supporters to Trump supporters or vice versa.
“Some voters will think that Donald is the more traditional evangelical for whatever itâs worth.”
Yes, because nothing screams “Sunday e’nin’ revival meeting” like a thrice-married reality T.V. personality and two-bit real estate developer from Manhattan...
I thought Cruz was a Baptist? Enlighten me on this, please - Is there not a difference between Evangelicals and Baptists? And, also, is there not various denominations of Baptists?
You Protestants have so many divisions that I have lost count, and it is just confusing as all hell to know who is what and when!
But it was to impress evangelicals that his evangelical past is much stronger or more familiar.....But again, in the grand scheme, itâs not newsworthy.

My opinion, Trump is deliberately trying to give Iowa to Cruz— I said that from the time he went after Carson.
Cruz’s strongest suit is religion— you can’t beat him there. He has the endorsement of not only Iowa’s Vander Plaats and Rep. Steve King, but evangelical leaders nationally.
Trump knows that when he says as you suggest— ‘I’m more evangelical’- he’s not just tweaking Cruz— more importantly, he’s tweaking the judgment of King and Vander Plaats. They are now in the position that they must come out and defend their reputations— and explain why they endorsed Cruz over Trump.
Attack Cruz on trade, he’s an “insider”, maybe even Canadian— never on religion, especially in Iowa.
Trump knows that- he’s punting Iowa.
>> Some voters will think that Donald is the more traditional evangelical for whatever itâs worth <<
Trump’s religious affiliation has been with the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. -— an organization which is decidedly NOT evangelical.
But maybe he’s recently been born again into another denomination?
(Inquiring minds want to know.)
