Ted Cruz has opened up a firm lead over rival Donald Trump in first-in-the-nation state Iowa, 31 to 21, according to a new Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register poll released Saturday.
The poll is closely watched by political analysts who consider it a reliable measure of Iowa caucus voters.....
Cruz's ascension represents the largest spike for one candidate between Des Moines Register polls in at least the last five presidential elections.
Though fifth overall, Jeb Bush records the highest negative ratings in the poll, with 54 percent of likely Caucus-goers disapproving of him....

He faces no real risk of one of his opponents making a similar argument against him now. Because making the equivalent argument about Trump that Cruz made about the ACA would mean arguing that tolerating Trump is a betrayal of deeply held conservative beliefs. No candidate is remotely ready to go that far yet.
Cruz is demonstrating a skill a president must have: avoiding a confrontation for a larger goal. During political campaigns, there is an obsession with presidential action. Yes. Iowa is strange. It is certainly not representative of America as a whole
1. Trump slammed a poll that has not yet been released
2. Trump started attacking Cruz
3. Trump now calls himself an evangelical
4. There were rows of empty chairs on Friday night
5. Trump walked back having suggested that Iowans are "stupid"
6. Trump made clear that winning Iowa is very, very, very important

The real nightmare is that Trump doesn’t get the nomination, runs as an independent, splits the right, and Hillary gets elected.
If that happens, say, “Bye Bye America.”

But on the other hand, Ted Cruz is much more balanced. He doesn't pick enemies needlessly. Every word is measured and considered, which can be viewed as timid or thought-out, depending on your perspective.
Donald Trump is like a Terminator with no friend-or-foe sensor. He called Megyn Kelly a bimbo. I winced when he said that Ben Carson, a thoroughly decent man, has "pathological illness" when Carson was referring to his youthful violent nature. Trump made a nasty swipe at Ted Cruz's religion by saying "not many evangelicals come out of Cuba." He told a Jewish group that they wouldn't vote for him because they wanted a candidate they could control with their money. He wants to ban all Muslim immigrants for a time (which I support), but a much less incendiary way of doing it is to ban immigrants from ISIS-infested countries, as Cruz wants to do. Trump gets offended very easily and is quick to insult others and get angry. Not the best trait for the president of the United States, who may need to build alliances and bring people along.
So Trump has more of the aggressiveness we need, but maybe he is too aggressive in some ways. Ted Cruz is a little more cautious than I might like, but with few unnecessary and even puzzling outbursts..."

For all the negative things you post here on Trump, it doesn’t dawn on your that in the poll released today, Trump is favored in a number of categories at 50, 49, & 48%.
Cruz doesn’t top out at over 34 on any of the issues.
In the full list in that section, Trump beats Cruz by 407 to 400 votes.
In the next section Trump’s description of experience is picked 39 to 30% over Cruz.
There’s a lot of meat in that polling data for Trump.
So that negative picture you’re trying to paint, you’re using the wrong colors.
Not really. Trump draws support from right, left and Indy. He goes Third party, it could be a close three way race.
If he gets out entirely, whoever the GOP settles on is a sure second place in the general.
Those poll results are interesting. Trump gets more votes for “best to take down ISIS”, but Cruz gets more for “best commander in chief”. Plus a host of other contradictions. Tells me more about the voters than it does the candidates.
That’s why I posted those numbers.
Folks can look at them and see some major conflicts.
