Thanks to right-wing deniers, schools still sow seeds of doubt over climate change
Dallas Morning News ^ | 12/15/2015 | Jonathan Zimmerman

Last Saturday, delegates from 195 countries signed a historic pact on human-made climate change. Following two weeks of debate in a Paris suburb, they agreed to lower their planet-warming pollution and to establish international monitoring and reporting of it.

But in many American classrooms, students are debating whether pollution warms the planet at all. According to a recent survey by the National Center for Science Education, 40 percent of teachers present human-made climate change as "controversial."

That's the result of a concerted effort by right-wing activists to raise specious questions about established science. And it harms the effort to teach truly controversial questions, which have too often been neglected in our schools.(snip)

How can our students become informed citizens, if we don't challenge the disinformation that is all around them?

For most of our history, teachers have been discouraged or barred from addressing controversial issues. Now that they're allowed to do so, it would be a true tragedy if they let a pseudo-debate get in the way of an actual one. There’s no controversy about whether humans have changed the climate. The real question, as we learned in Paris, is what they should do about it.

Let’s see....... In the last week I’ve seen articles about volcanic activity causing an ice age and a huge methane leak in California putting far more gas into the atmosphere than would be produced by coal fired electric plants. Yet none of the global warming crowd are calling for limits on volcano emissions or methane gas production. Could there be forces beyond our control such as sun activity that truly influence the climate? Nope, perish the thought and teach our youth that we are the problem.

Nearly a century ago over a hundred scientists signed onto a letter saying that Einstein and his General Theory of Relativity were wrong.

Einstein replied with something along the lines of “why did they all sign the letter when all it would have taken is one to prove me wrong”

So consensus-bullying by members of the scientific community against minority opinins is nothing new. There may be an overwhelming majority expressing the opinion that AGW is real, but given a credible (if small) group of dissident scientists opposing the expressed consensus AND the presence of major conflicts of interest and peer pressure within the majority, it’s appropriate to say that it IS controversial and that the science isn’t settled.

I don’t deny climate change. It’s very real. Any geologist worth his salt can tell you things change - lakes become desert, volcanoes erupt, etc. Mankind has dealt with climate change for many millennium without any government regulation and we’re still here.

This guy could say/write this with a straight face??? Disinformation only comes from “right-wing activists” - glad he set us straight on that. ESTABLISHED SCIENCE???
Kind of gullible, isn’t he?

“...established science...” Great flashback to the Congressional Hearing where Sen. Cruz questioned the President of the Sierra Club (it’s on youtube). The idiot from the Sierra Club could only muster the ‘established science’ BS without being able to define a reason for ‘the pause’ or give any other credible reason to believe this nonsense.

A lie. Not an error or an hypothesis to be tested, but an outright lie. I am embarrassed for this idiot. Lying marxists like him cheapen the degree that busted my ass to get. Anyone with a reasonable knowledge of models and statistics can see the glaring problems with the anthropomorphic globull warming BS.

Gun removal, climate change and freedom of religion plus numerous other issues that have helped make this a great nation have been socialists targets for many years.
It starts in our schools and universities as the socialist educators brainwash our children day after day. Everything we feel was/is good about this nation, they continue working to destroy. I feel our nation will NEVER recover from this tyranny until such time a complete overhaul in our government, our schools and universities has taken place. Sadly, I will never see this as my time remaining here on earth shortens daily. I fear that my grand children and great grand children will never know the country I once knew.

Jonathan, you should stop breathing out that pollution! Save the planet!

I've asked that very question myself a time or two.

Don't think that it was for the same reasons as this liberal twit, though.

It’s not the deniers sowing the seeds of doubt, it’s the data. During the time Dr. Werner von Braun was sending men to the moon, he hung a sign over his desk: “In God we trust. All others provide data.” It seems that NASA has lost that direction. The seeds of doubt of global warming were sown nearly two decades ago when global temperatures ceased increasing, and now we have a full grown forest. It’s thriving, undoubtedly, on the CO2 fertilizer permeating the atmosphere.
