War was going to happen regardless. If the Civil War had occurred decades earlier, say the early 1830s, President Jackson would have been no less obstinate in keeping the union together (and as said, he would’ve hanged the leaders, including his own 1st term Vice-President Calhoun).
Specifically, slavery was legal in the Union slave states of Missouri, Delaware, Maryland and Kentucky until the ratification of the 13th amendment in December of 1865, 8 months after the surrender of the Confederacy.

That’s a great idea. Even if one thinks succession was a lousy idea (it was), those Confederate monuments have historical value.
