IT HAS been a bloody year in Baltimore, Maryland’s largest city. On November 14th the police department reported the city’s 300th homicide in 2015, a total not seen since 1999. The surge in killings in the majority-black city of roughly 623,000 began after the death on April 19th of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who was fatally injured while in police custody. Since Mr Gray’s death the city has recorded 244 homicides, a 78% increase over the same period in 2014, representing more than 100 additional deaths (see chart). Criminologists and city officials disagree as to the causes. Some say police have deliberately pulled back from poor, black neighbourhoods, a theory that the police disputes. Others blame an influx of drugs from pharmacies looted during the April riots.

I love the way leftists always sit around scratching their heads wondering about the cause of things.
Two of the three causes they point to are a result of failed leadership. Truth to be told, the third is too, since the pharmacies probably wouldn’t have been looted had the mayor not given the questionable early orders that she did. Regardless, asking the people who are there is probably more productive than idle speculation. Probably that is why the Economist put this pretty much as a question.
The idiot States attorney has a huge problem on her blood soaked hands. After the first trial was a hung jury and with 5 more cops to prosecute on trumped up charges, the racist little twerp is in a jam.
Does she continue down the path of disgracing cops to appease the BLM elements or does she punt on this farcical trial and risk have the city burned down on her watch?

Until we face the fact that these unloved children are bred to provide a life of leisure for the mother (and in some cases the father), this problem will never be addressed. Black activists are now claiming others get a leg up by having their parents read to them at bedtime when they are children; those bred for cash are parked in front of the TV instead (or running the streets at 10).

There is no shortage of applicants for those positions; it is easy pay and at least in NJ cities, nobody sticks his neck out. Simply “de-police” for 25 years (showing up for work then doing nothing), and you can retire while many taxpayers have another 20 years to go in the rat-race.
I’m not aware of any of these places that can’t find employees for any government job.

These young people lack the basic skills to work at Wal-Mart; you’d be shocked at how completely uneducated they are (and undisciplined).

Not to mention the continuing saga of failed leadership around the trials of the six policemen accused of homicide. How stupid does one have to be to not see the horrible consequences of doing this to the city's police force without a thorough investigation first.
Ask the Baltimore State’s Attorney why this is happening. Her actions have directly led to this result. Meanwhile, cops are protecting themselves, no more gone to jail, none dead, all going home after their shifts. I love a happy ending.
While the absent fathers get a lot of attention, the fact is that these kids also have horrible mothers. In the past white children living in these situations would have (rightfully) been seized by the state; when threatening public assistance/housing is the only way the mothers force the kids to attend school, then obviously they are in unsuitable homes.
Talk to the people who teach in these districts; it is absolutely horrifying. When you realize some second graders don’t know what a “book” is (a true story from a teacher on one of NJ’s welfare reservations), then you realize most will never fit in a modern society.
I work in Baltimore and you are absolutely correct. I work at one of the largest employers in Baltimore and am a member of NGO groups that work together to build pipelines of quality / qualified workers. For low-skilled workers getting 10 to 15 per hour the hardest part of finding a worker is to find one that can pass a drug test, and will show up for work on a regular basis.
Training them for even basic skills is a huge burden on company. Job skills that used to be taught at home. Simple things like not goofing off the minute the boss leaves, or ensure you do your job well, because someone is paying for a product.
