It was the creation of NATO that encouraged the collapse to socialism in Europe. As the whole of the continent realized their security was guaranteed on the backs of the American taxpayer, their governments turned to growing social spending while sacrificing necessary defense investments. Of course, such elevated socialist safety-net spending made our American socialists jealous - not realizing there wasn't a rich protector out there promising to impoverish its citizens for our security.

We really need to reassess all our defense treaties to make sure our "partners" aren't shirking their native responsibilities to rely instead on the US taxpayer.

You are corrected. I point that fact out to liberals that point out how Europe can afford more benefits than we do. I don’t see any reason why we have to pay for their defense so they can piss their money away.
