Hawaii’s last sugar plantation will wind down by the end of this year, its owner announced today.
Alexander & Baldwin Inc. said it will phase out sugarcane farming on Maui at Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. over the next 12 months and transition the 36,000-acre farm to a diversified crop model.
A&B said many employees will be laid off starting in March as their specific functions are completed, and that about half of the 675 HC&S workers will be retained through the end of the last harvest late this year.
Company leaders said the decision was reached with “great regret†and was based partly on HC&S losing $30 million last year.

We’ll be getting all our sugar from Cuba now, to enrich Obama’s cronies.
Once the sanctions against Cuba truly lift, we could see a huge surge of sugar cane coming in from Cuba, which has ideal conditions for sugar cane production and the cost of shipping the sugar cane to the USA for processing is relatively low.
Can’t remember a time we didn’t have C & H Sugar in my home. As a young child we had it. During my youth and transition to adult, I’ve always had it in the home.
I wonder if this will affect C & H Sugar company.
They seem to have diversified their sources.
Hope this isn’t the precursor to it going out of business.

On the Big Island we haven’t had sugar for 20 years. But sugar is what made Hawaii a state, that and Pearl Harbor.

Hawaii German immigrant Claus Spreckles brought the idea of sugar plantations to Hawaii and founded C&H . He might have been Austrian or Swiss m by I think German .

Given how the local tax system works here in Hawaii, I’m not surprised one bit. The State government has long been taxing people and businesses out of existence here.
We have had a signed free trade treaty with Mexico for over 20 years yet sugar imports from Mexico are still severely restricted to protect sugar beet farmers in Florida.
Agriculture is the least free trade in the world.
I doubt we see a flood from Cuba.
And if we do Senators from Florida will put a quick end to it.
Has Pineapple production ceased as well in Hawaii? Back in the day (60’s, 70’s) You could always count on getting one as a gift from family and friends returning from vacation.
However, with Cuba so close to Florida, the sugar refiners in Florida could do booming business processing sugar cane, especially given the very low transportation costs.
