They had not served the MINIMUM MANDATORY sentences for the crimes they were convicted of.
The trial judge broke the law and the government appealed and won.
Whether or not the 5 year sentence was “fair”, I don’t know, but the judge’s job is to follow the law not legislate from the bench.
