What a horrible situation. I’m a mom and would fight to the death to protect my child. But I’m not sure what the best response would have been in that situation. If I lunged for the perp with the gun and he kills me, would they then be likely to kill my daughter to eliminate a murder witness? I don’t know that there’s any best response for an unarmed person in this situation.
That's a very, very good point, and something that the father probably never considered during the confusion and panic. But I suppose that now he will consider it, and for the rest of his life.
Bet your bottom dollar this horrible event will find itsway into a Trump speech soon—as well it should.
I have to agree with you on this one. I don’t like blaming the victim. But my Father would have died himself protecting me in a scenario like that. That I am sure of.
Note to all young women, especially on both liberal coasts, arm yourself for your own protection and move out of liberal areas where guns aren't allowed!

How would she have felt being gang raped while watching her father being murdered? Given the situation, he is unarmed against 5 thugs at least one with a gun, the only way he could help his daughter was by going for help. There was nothing he could do for her by staying when told to leave.
Passing up the opportunity he was given to get her help might have enhanced his street cred in the eyes of internet mall ninjas, commandos and other tough guys, but it could only have made things worse for his daughter.
Put the blame where it belongs, with the 5 thugs and the NYC and NYS lawmakers who deny law abiding men and women the right to protect themselves and their families from armed thugs.
You were saying that he was partially at fault for this. He was walking his adult daughter through a park, when this nightmare happens, and you state that he shares some of the blame? Pretty sick.
I agree 100%. He did the only thing he could donfor her, get help.

You fight, period. Never give them what they want. Worse case they kill you and actually go to jail for something rather than probation or light sentence for rape and you daughter knows you love her enough to fight for her. Chicken shit.

I once read an article written by some self-defense expert. He said that everyone should carry throw-away money in addition to a wallet.
Throw-away money is a couple of folded bills, with a twenty on the outside, all held together by a paper clip. Then if you're accosted, as you were, throw that money at the thug's feet as you back away.
Not a perfect solution, of course, but it's worth considering.

I don’t understand the cowardly responses. What kind of man abandons a woman, much less his daughter, to an army of thugs. Shame, at least be a keyboard commando on the issue and pretend you would make a stand and protect her.
