Probably because random street crime is not perpetrated by recent interlopers, but by long-term residents, and it mostly occurs in areas where the victims are often sympathetic to the imagined plight of their attackers.

Why should I go to some other neighborhood to protect people who likely voted for the predicament they're in?

My neighborhood is very safe, and people go around freely without any real fear of being assaulted. And, of course, having a gun to protect one's self is both common and socially acceptable.
