U.S. Proposes Spending $4 Billion to Encourage Driverless Cars Mike Spector and Mike Ramsey Updated Jan. 14, 2016 4:41 p.m. ET

The Obama administration proposed spending nearly $4 billion over a decade to make driverless cars on U.S. roads more widespread in an effort to curb fatalities and traffic jams.

The proposal, which still requires congressional approval, aims to have federal regulators work with auto makers and others to craft policies and potential rules across the U.S. for policing autonomous vehicles that move without a driver at the wheel. Regulators would also test so-called connected vehicles that talk to one another to avoid crashes in designated spots across the U.S. under the $3.9 billion budget proposal.

It isn’t clear whether or when any new regulations might be adopted. Regulators said they plan to issue guidance within six months on preferred performance characteristics and testing methods for driverless cars and collaborate with state officials on policies.

Isn’t California busy trying to ban driverless cars?

That reminds me of when the government spent beaucoup bucks to develop a backwards-steering motorcycle even though the contractor said repeatedly that it would not work.

Driverless cars. Am I missing something here? What’s the problem they’re trying to solve? I don’t get it.

A driverless car in every driveway by 2025.
___

And an unooccupied home to go along with the driveway where the driverless car sits. The insanity is making me crazy.

Unooccupied should be unoccupied. This insanity is affecting my spelling.

I can’t see any valid reason (other than graft and theft of taxpayer money) for the government to spend anything on driverless cars.

The list of major companies investing in the sector is already long and they are more than capable of developing autonomous cars without politicians pretending to get involved so that they can funnel money to themselves and their friends.

“One might think the auto companies would work on this.”

The list of auto and tech companies working on autonomous cars is long.

Ford, GM, VW, Audi, Mercedes, Tesla, Volvo, Uber, Lyft, Google, Intel, Mobileye, Delphi, Visteon, Valeo, NVidia are a few. There’s no shortage of big players and autonomous vehicles will be here sooner than most people realize.

The main reason that Obama and his GOPe collaborators want the government to funnel money into this sector is so that they can they can use it as cover to enrich themselves and their donors.

Truck companies are investing in autonomous vehicles in a big way. They will be among the first adapters.

Test vehicles are already on the road here, particularly in Silicon Valley. Some have close to million miles logged. I think the Assembly wants to require a “driver” to be in the vehicle and for normal controls to be included until the technology is proven- some of the companies have been planning to produce test cars that have no steering wheel, no brake pedal, etc. The Assembly is saying “no way”.

lol - every single Automotive OEM is working on autonomous vehicles. Many already have it, just not yet production ready. Of course, now the government has to step in and screw with things.

Let me guess, Relatives and other people known to politicians are going to say they have decided to design a driverless car and need a 400 million dollar grant.Rent a warehouse, piddle around for 6 mo. and declare bankruptcy.

Insane waste of spending. But let it go on. The sooner we get to the other end of the default and repudiation process, probably the better.
