Did Trump walk into a trap on “NY Values” fight?
Legal Insurrection ^ | 1/15/16 | William A. Jacobson

The exchange between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump on “NY values” was one of the highlights of last night’s debate.

While Cruz clearly was referring to liberalism, he used a phrase that left him open to Trump’s counterattack invoking 9/11:

he media is thrilled with Trump’s response. Of course, much of that media is in or from NY City. I expressed last night that I wasn’t sure that the issue would play in Trump’s favor outside NY.

I was born in NYC, spent my early childhood there, grew up in and returned to the NYC suburbs after law school until moving to Rhode Island in 1993. And since 2008 have lived (originally part time now full time) in Ithaca.

I understand what Cruz was referring to. And it has nothing to do with knocking the heroism of NY police and firemen, or how New Yorkers reacted under attack. It has everything to do with political, economic and social outlooks which are not accepted in the Republican Party in general much less among conservatives.

The Cruz campaign apparently thinks this is a fight it needs to have, via Washington Examiner:

Ah, did that big bad Cruz hurt your NYC rooster feelings? Ain’t hard to see what Cruz was talking about — all one has to do is see NYers voted in a socialist governor and NYC mayor. Plus, you have Schumer and had Clinton as your senators. Speaks volumes about NY values —

I can’t argue the fact that he is a fast learner.

To me, the most interesting thing this election cycle has been watching the posturing of all the candidates. I know this is always the case, but it seems more out in the open.

Maybe this has to do with the media...or maybe it has to do with the fact that I’m older and see things I didn’t in the past, lol.

The really rich seem to turn to leftism. I think it is god-complex or narcissism. Look at the founders of Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway. I don't know, but worry Trump could have the same outlook. And like you posted, Trump is not PC, he attacks everyone and recently Cruz. Trump has come out in the past in favor of most left-wing causes. Was this just to smooth the skids of the NYC politics? I don't know. He would not be able to run as a Democrat because he is a business man and the left seems to hate that the most. Someone like BHO who never really had a real job and most of his cabinet have not either are the ones the left admire. Is Trump running as a republican because he has to if he wants a chance to win (like Bloomberg did in NYC)? Would he say what he needs to say to win? Would he make contributions to democrats who he does not support to get their approvals for his projects? His admissions of playing the system make me think he would do the same to his benefit as president. But, if Trump is the candidate against Clinton or Sanders, you can bet I would take the risk to vote for Trump.

It’s a conservative forum, Cruz IS the conservative in the race. What were you expecting?

So, it was a big secret that Trump is from NY, and no one knew it until St. Teddy Bear, Soccer Ball Cruz, brought it out last night? For someone supposedly so smart, Cruz sure is dumb. He wouldn’t listen to his staff when they told him McConnell was lying. So, after he found otu they were telling the truth - he went on the Senate floor and hot dogged to an empty Senate for the media.

St. Cruz is so smart that he didn’t realize until 2014 that he was a dual citizen of Canada? That’s really smart, isnily smart, isn’t it?

He is so smart that he forgot to include 2 loans when he filed his FEC papers. Sure - he did.

Sorry, but, Cruz isn’t a NBC of the U.S., and is therefore, ineligible to be president or VP. You can spin and twist the NBC clause all you want, but, he isn’t eligible.

One difference may be the internet. We hang out at FR and pick apart the campaigns. It’s a lot harder for candidates to escape our scrutiny.

I’m undecided on this but I think that in the world of high stakes gambits, Cruz might just have pulled off a real sleeper of a move. Think about it.... he got Trump to deflect to a sleazy position of playing the conservative version of the race card (appealing to 9/11 when this had nothing to do with the original question), he got Trump in a position where he has perhaps unwittingly attached himself to liberal values.... and this will truly backfire on Trump if there is a stampede to find out what that Russert interview was all about, and while Cruz probably was never going to get anyone in NY to endear themselves to him, he probably gained more outside of NY than he lost. At FR, some are viewing this as if Cruz really stepped in it... but I actually see no upside for Trump with it at all. Trump has done one thing very well.... taking what looked like a losing position and turning it into a positive. We shall see if Cruz can steal a page from the Donald’s own playbook with this one.

New York City to me politically is Hillary Clinton, Bella Abzug, Anthony Wiener, Madeline not so Bright, Bloomberg and Trump. All politicians from that part of the State are progressives, liberals, socialists, communists or budding tyrants. Someone tell me the last pol from that place who was conservative, smaller government, strict Constitutionalist...any?

Don’t worry about the retired NYer vote in Florida. They’ll all have to vote to save their former senator from the Bern. They won’t be playing games in our primary.

Trump literally rubbed Ted’s nose in it. All Cruz could do was applaud his own humiliation. Never seen anything like it.

It was the best he could do.

And like the exoneration of Bill Clinton, it was necessary, otherwise we indict ourselves.
