Said this elsewhere, but my guess is that the crews were screwing around on a joyride, racing or whatever, and the numbnuts Lt. wasn't sufficiently familiar with his charts to know they were getting in Iranian watwra. When confronted, he panicked and just surrenders.

Embarrassing as hell for the Navy, which is why nothing has leaked. Just a WAG, but that's where I'd put my money.

You are correct. It will come out in the investigation that they didn’t know how to use the navigation. In essence, we have sailors that don’t know how to sail. The commander of the riverine squadron will be gone, and it probably won’t stop there.

I have trouble navigating from my living room to my kitchen. But my car has a GPS, and when driving I know exactly where I am. Those boats have to have navigational equipment at least as good as my car's.
