Snow Coating Cripples DC Commute, Leaves Drivers Stranded

WASHINGTON (WJZ)—The D.C. Metro area got a nasty taste of what’s to come this weekend.

Chaos on the roads with just an inch of snow last night.

If Wednesday night is any indication of what we’ll see this weekend, then you need to start planning ahead and avoid being outside at all costs.

On Wednesday traffic at a standstill for miles.

Collisions and spin outs, all from an inch of snow and black ice that coated the DC area.

It’s an ugly preview of what’s to come this weekend when we’re expected to be pounded with two feet of snow.

Many of the roads were not pre-treated which attributed to the crippling conditions.

“What we experienced last evening from this snow event was nowhere near what the forecast had been for the weather in Maryland,” said Pete Rahn, Secretary of Transportation.

After sitting for more than 5 hours some chose to ditch their cars and walk home instead.

“I hope they would have anticipated this better and treated the roads,” said one driver.

It’s a nightmare people are hoping to not re-live, as the area prepares for one of the worst blizzards in recent history.

You know, given the last few years you think they’d invest in a minimal amount of snow removal equipment.

I was in D.C. during the Snowlocalypse and I’ll never forget people trying to clear sidewalks with leaf blowers.

Jeez, you would think the world is coming to an end.

One year I was driving through Charlotte NC after a freak snow storm. It had been two days since it started. There were cars and trucks all over the place. Those guys did not know how to drive.

DC gets now every year. You would think they would get it together.

Proof DC is full of idiots. Can’t handle snow in a place that gets snow.

actually my leaf blower worked quite well on the inch of fluffy snow on my sidewalk here in a Maryland suburb of DC this morning. But some of the roads were icy due to no pre, during, or post treatment with brine or sand/salt.

They have been like this forever.

I was married in the winter,56 years ago,and we went to D.C. for our honeymoon.

About 2” of snow had fallen and we saw cars WITH CHAINS ON.

Astonishing.

You’ll find that there’s a lot of ice involved when the south gets snow. It’s never dry snow that’s fairly straightforward to drive through, there’s a layer of ice beneath wet, heavy snow. Don’t get too confident that it’s just idiots who don’t know how to drive in it, even though there are quiet a few of those. Not much opportunity to learn how unless they’re skiers.

I think they all need to come spend a winter ...a full freakin’ winter in the ‘snowbelt’. An inch of snow creates chaos? Wake up to 10-12 inches of the white stuff and still have to get to work...ON TIME.

No, traffic was moving about half mile an hour last night. It was literally driving on ice and any incline and gravity would send vehicles out of control. Experienced Colorado drivers would have found last nights conditions in DC to be miserable.

One year my sister in Charlotte used a dust pan to shovel her driveway.

It’s a sick feeling when the road turns into a sheet of ice in seeming a few seconds, and your car won’t stay put no matter what you do. One minute it’s just water, then all heck breaks loose.

“they’d invest in a minimal amount of snow removal equipment.”

Just what has been done, MINIMAL AMOUNT SPENT.

Also it didn’t help that there was no pre-treatment of the DC streets. Prince George’s Co near Andrews AFB did to pre-treatment on Wednesday and it made the roads passable this morning. a 1 mile stretch inside the beltway was not touched and it was all ice, from where the snow had been compressed. there were 3 cars in the ditch and a couple parked along the road side, one with a smashed front end.

I grew up in Indiana thus the snow doesn’t bother me, but ICE is another matter.

Exactly! I was out last night and found the driving with my front-wheel drive minivan to be the hardest I had experienced since I last drove a RWD sedan. I saw cars of all types, including SUV’s, spinning their way up shallow hills. All drivers I saw seemed very capable, driving at responsible (i.e., very slow) speeds and handling their cars well.

The local jurisdictions are another matter - minimal pretreatment would have prevented this. DC does not come to a standstill in snow because of the drivers, but because of the governments.
