Ah, the but the illegals and the donors argument.
Obviously those are big problems. Both are very damaging to our system and to the country.
The problem is Donald Trump has been establishment all his life up until June of last year. He barely has been involved in any of the battles anyone here actually cares about. He with his past actions has made government worse. He changes his mind and flips and flops. I am not convinced that he actually knows what to do with the illegal aliens. He tweets out in 2013 that yes we need to secure the border but after that we can talk about amnesty. He tells the dreamers that same year that they have convinced him with their arguments. He does an interview saying we need to give illegals here to succeed. He allegedly has employee more than a few illegals on the cheap labor express himself. He says we’re going to build a wall but it will have a door in it so they can come back through. He says that he will deport illegals but expedite the good ones to get them back here as soon as possible. But in all of this since June of last year he is now the most hawkish on border security and the biggest conservative on immigration that we have running. I’m sorry but I don’t buy that and I’m not sure the establishment buys that either. Donald Trump is the classic guy who will say whatever he needs to in order to get you over to his side at the right time. Now if that thrills you that is fine. It doesn’t thrill me in the slightest.
You are correct that it’s not really right for me to broad brush or generalize like that.
My apologies.
And that is your right. I’ve read everything you said here, and have seen over and over. My only question to you is, what exactly do you believe Ted can/will do with the illegals? I just don’t see him getting it done - and I don’t believe he even wants to.
For me, I’ll stick with Trump. I thank you for your response.

My apologies.
Mr. Buckley was originally very conservative; by 1977, he started drifting leftward with his backing for the Panama Canal giveaway.
They want Cruz over Trump because Cruz will be easy to take down, once Trump is gone. Lots a crazy religious stuff about Cruz that will NOT go over well. Trump gone, Cruz gone, enter Jeb.
Yes, I think this nails it.
The absolute last best option, a Hail Mary, for both the (R)epublicrat establishment and their UniParty alleged opposition in the Conservative intelligentsia is to somehow legitimately defeat Trump in the primaries.
Cruz or any doctrinaire evangelical and/or Constitutional (C)onservative is easily defeated in the general just by the very nature of electoral politics in the twelve swing states. They can only be expected to hold onto the already conquered "red" states. This includes all of our ideological soulmates like Pat Robertson (1988), Buchanan, Alan Keyes ( my favorite ), Santorum, Huck, Newt Gingrich and others that barely left the starting gate. On this matter, Bob Dole was correct talking abut catastrophic losses.
What has the (R)epublicrats going psycho is that if they cannot stop Trump "legitimately" in the primaries, they are left with stealing the nomination back at the convention. So he either bolts to a 3rd party, or halfheartedly supports the replacement candidate, but in both cases the party faces Whig-like extinction, and in the case of theft there would be an exodus.
This is their only shot here. Were Cruz to win the nomination and then lose the general with similar or greater defeat margins as Romney, they would have their talking point to diss conservatives for another generation.
The establishment has to thread a needle here. They have to take out Trump while holding on to his supporters. Frankly that is impossible IMHO, but they will try anyway, and in this case they are united with the conservative intelligentsia. Trump is a uniter after all!
The only enigma left to explain is why the Cruzers are melting down over Trump the man, as the comments clearly show. In this primary, can someone point to any state other than Iowa that Cruz shows any promise in? If you cannot win all these states in the primary of mostly (R) and (C) voters then what happens in the general when the doors open to (D) and (L) voters? What is everybody smoking?
