Lorna McGhee came down from Vancouver to do a series of flute pieces, none of which I'd ever heard. It's good to be exposed to new material.
Ed Arron came in from New York to play cello in the Schubert Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in E-flat, which I also saw him do in South Carolina during my years in Georgia. They got the end of the piece just right. Schubert ends the trio with a quarter note, filling the bar with rests. He wants you in and out quickly with no long held notes, and a good performance puts a wicked spin on the last few bars. These guys made it sound like a whiplash, and it was wonderful. Max Levinson (new to the festival) was on piano and Alexander Kerr on violin.
Ed gave a wonderful interview with KING-FM, which should be up as a podcast on their website soon. I had no idea of his distinguished musical lineage.
The Beethoven Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in E-flat, Op. 70/2, was a lot of fun. Bob deMaine came in from L.A., where he is principal cello of the L.A. Philharmonic, and he captured the humor of the piece, as did Erin Keefe (violin) and Max Levinson (piano). Lou wrote some great gags into the piece, which I covered a few months ago at the Canteen.
The Debussy String Quartet hadn't been done for quite a few years, and Kerr, Arron, James Ehnes (second violin and Artistic Director of the society) and Rebecca Albers (viola) gave a splendid performance, Debussy wrote some wonderful material for the viola, and it was one of those luminous performances that stay with you.

Wow...Time Flies! I remember the very fine job you did on the last Festival.
Actually, we have two festivals. The Winter Festival is 6 concerts spread over two weekends in late January. The Summer Festival is 12 concerts spread over 4 weeks in July. That’s why it seems like time flying.
