A number of years ago, they developed a form of birth control for men. I don't remember the specifics of what it was but what was striking was that one of the men got something that was equivalent to a hangnail and they shut the entire research project down.

Testosterone propionate was trialled as a male contraceptive. It was even recommended for that purpose by the World Health Organisation at one point. Then it was discovered that continuous use greatly increases the risk of developing prostate cancer and its future as a male contraceptive suddenly ended.

Interesting.

I know a young teacher who got a pulmonary embolism due to the birth control she was taking and will probably be in a nursing home for the rest of her life

I took birth control meds for a very short time , less than a week. It gave me such extreme headaches that I quit. Had I not quit I might have been one of these rare cases.

Yes, you are right about that. I think my feeling of outrage over this particular case is that a young lady who is just a bit more than a child (only 16!) is dead due to a confluence of factors, including the lack of medical diligence.

As you say, though, it’s not an exact art, and probably other things could have helped prevent it, such as the girl’s parents educating themselves about the risk of the drug they allowed their daughter to take and getting her care immediately.

Also, who knows what part the sloppiness of the British NHS played in the lack of thoroughness, which seems to have been not only the doctor but nurses and staff.

I would feel this way for anyone, but a 16-year old cannot be expected to understand this level of responsibility like a 30-year old woman would, to take care of herself. Maybe someone so young should not be prescribed meds that are unnecessary for health reasons?

Just my thoughts, I appreciate your point, The All Knowing...
