I think your assumptions and math is/are sound. Still I can’t escape the “feeling” that that total number is low - by a lot. I personally know three persons that have well over 100 guns each. One of them I think has well over 500, so many that I have never seen them all and he likes to show them off. One of the local truck stops has about 150 on display.
I guess it's because they're small and "cute," and less intimidating.
Go with the gun you like.
I was out shooting with a friend who had a 32 Cap & Ball revolver. The cylinder hung up and wouldn’t rotate. I think the caps were too thick and were binding up the cyl. Always one to help out, I was rotating the cylinder by hand. Once the next chamber lined up with the barrel it went off. It embedded a wide band of unburnt black powder in my hand. Ouch!
Another time, I discovered that my new Ruger Single Six 22 had a burr on the forcing cone. It was spitting lead, out to the side, out the cylinder gap.
” For me, that starts days ahead of time before we even get to the range. I cover basic firearm safety...”
Thank you. The very best first lesson. Trying to teach safety at the range, with live firing around you, while wearing ears...maybe even getting struck by ejected shells from the next lane over...ain’t the way to do it. Safety IS the most important lesson.
This last year at our “so you got your first gun” day at the range we broke in new rifle shooters with a 22 AR platform. Worked out well. Previously we had been using 10/22’s.
I was out yesterday with my new takedown 10/22. After about 10 shots sighting in at 50yrds, it shoots incredible groups. I gotta get more ammo now. That was fun.
Is that a permit to BUY a pistol, or permission to CARRY a pistol? How many tubes of Preparation H did you have to use?
I had a Marlin Model 99, the predecessor of the Model 60. I could not find any ammo that it would shoot any better than one inch groups at 25 yards. So I gave it away.
I guess I was spoiled growing up with a Remington 512 Sportstmaster.
“...Ruger Single Six 22 had a burr on the forcing cone.”
I think I owned that gun once. At least one like it!
Very interesting. The 421 million figure is pretty close to the 396 million figure that I posted for the end of 2015:

Must be the individual rifle.
I Have a Marlin model 99. I shot it at 33 yards (100 feet) and was able to get groups of .6 inches with a couple of different types of ammo.
I consider that decent for a stock, non-target .22 sporter.
I loved that gun, once I cleaned up the forcing cone. I got talked into selling it to a Navy bud.
Be that a lesson to you, never sell a gun you like!
I have since replaced it though, but the one I have now has a scope on it. Not the same, but with my old eyes it helps.
I’m going to go back to instinct shooting. That’s how I first taught myself pistol shooting, as my first handgun had sights so bad that they were unusable.
Gadsden,
I have had a Ruger 10/22 for 10 years.
It is everything you could want in a small caliber rifle.
Last year for my birthday my wife got me a Henry 22 Golden Boy.
I took it home and shot 21 out of 22 targets of my first shots right out of the box.
It is sweet and I hung it on the wall right under my father in Laws Flag.
Go for the Henry, Just WOW.
I am of the opinion that one of the best long term strategies to protect our 2nd amendment rights is to invite non-gun owners to the range.
I have always been in love with the Browning 22’s.
SA-22 for a semi
BL-22 for a lever gun.
Well worth the extra money.
Well as that Chinese dude said, “we will never invade America because there will be a gun behind every blade of grass”
First lesson my Dad taught me was “All guns are loaded” He told me more people were killed by unloaded guns than by loaded ones. Still remember it 50 years later.
LOL....BUY....
