A tradition in Brazil has been stopped due to financial woes. At least 48 cities located in eight states all over the country decided to cancel their carnivals because of the recession.

News.com reported that the current recession in Brazil has led to the bleeding of financial resources among municipalities, spurring them to cancel their carnivals to save money that can be used for other programs. Cities in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Goias, Tocantins, Rio Grande do Norte, Minas Gerais, Paraiba and Rondonia changed their plans to hold carnivals at the final moment.

I am Catholic but this whole concept of participating in debauchery before Lent makes no sense to me, perhaps my inner Puritan.

Pretty soon they’ll be shutdown permanently so as not to offend Muslims.

Maybe for the big ones that attract tourists, for example, Rio. But most of the cities cited are not tourist areas so it is more for the locals.

Its probably like the Olympics and the Super Bowl. It makes money for the rich guys and the cities foot the bill.

“Pretty soon they’ll be shutdown permanently so as not to offend Muslims.”

I think this is it already, including the excuse they’ve provided for it.

With Brazil holding the Olympic Games this summer, why are they worried? They should make millions from the international visitors.

Yes, really. What is so bad about carnivals? The ones I remember had merry-go-rounds, cotton candy and some game where you threw darts at balloons to win a stuffed animal.

How much can it cost to get people together to wear some costumes, walk in a parade and drink?

The Mummers of Philly started that way....

:-)

Pikers. New Orleans and some surrounding communities did not cancel carnival after Katrina.

Now no bread OR circuses for the people... but they’ll still throw them. Research Carnival... it’s 13 schools that compete for best show. It’s fairly wild and not PG-13. Hopefully some of the 1% will chip in.

The modern day Carnival in Brazil is a highly orchestrated and expensive event where the general public doesn’t participate other than as an audience. It is now more of a spectacle as opposed to a celebration or party.

9 With Brazil holding the Olympic Games this summer, why are they worried? They should make millions from the international visitors.

There were posts on FR earlier this month addressing how the Brazilian Olympic organizing committee was scaling back the size of the audience venues for a large number of events because of budget shortfalls. Continue to see reports of how they continue to have pollution problems in some of the surrounding salt water bay competition sites. And the large effort they are making to essentially contain the favelas from storming venue sites.

I was pulling for Brazil to do a great job for this Olympics. It is not sounding encouraging with 7+ months to go.

I did some poking around and found that Brazil battles a huge corruption probe that has ensnared top politicians and some of the country’s most prominent businessmen, as well as its deepest recession in generations. With these political and economic problems, along comes the Zita virus transmitted by the mosquito (and I think from person to person vectors). Since October, Brazil has recorded 3,893 suspected cases of the birth defect - which can lead to stillbirths, as well as long-lasting developmental microcephaly.

I think the Summer Olympics are going to be a bust for Brazil. Rio organizers are cutting about $500 million in expenses and several million tickets remain unsold. The government has to contend with the polluted rivers and lakes rife with viruses. These are to be used for sailing, canoeing and rowing. All are a result of outdated sewage treatment methods. The cleanup, if they even have those games, will be huge.

I have never been to Brazil (and have no desire to ever go there), but, from what I have seen in news clips about these celebrations, I would say it’s a good thing that these disgusting displays will not go forward.

From what I can tell, the main attractions to these festivals are writhing, barely-dressed females.

Wow, they didn’t have those kind of carnivals when I was a kid. But if they did, I might have been a more regular carnival-goer.
