The Wildcat and the P-40 could hold their own against a Zero. The improved Wildcat(FM2) was effective against Zeros.
Wildcats had a 6:1 kill ratio on Zeros.

In a climbing and turning fight, the Zero was clearly superior to the P-40.

Chennault said the P-40 was inferior to the Zero in climb rate and maneuverability. He developed tactics of diving on the Zeros. Then the P-40 could out-dive the Zero and get outta Dodge.
