Donald Trump becomes the choice of the Republican establishment
Reuters ^ | January 27, 2016 | Bill Schneider

What we are seeing now is a split. The Republican Party establishment is anxiously embracing Trump. The conservative ideological establishment is angrily rejecting Trump and promoting Cruz. What’s the difference?

Republican Party leaders see Trump as more flexible and pragmatic. “We’ve got to make deals,” Trump said at a campaign rally last week. “We don’t want to sign executive orders. We want to make good deals.” Deal making is something professional politicians understand.

If you want a Republican Party that continues to be pragmatic (i.e., let Nancy Pelosi run the country), your obvious choice is Donald Trump. The same people in Congress that surrendered conservative principles during the Bush years (Lott, McConnell, Boehner, Ted's buddy Orin Hatch) are all lining up behind another liberal in sheep's clothing.

Or you could choose the guy who actually has fought for conservatism. Trump is right: Most of the Senate hates him. They want to destroy conservatism and maintain the statist status quo, and he makes their work harder.

The folks who brought us the Bushes, Dole, McCain and Romney now want us to fall in line behind Trump... because he supposedly can win. Wasn't that Romney's argument? Dole's? McCain's?

When Cruz brought about the government shut-down, the Trumps and McConnells of the world told us he had doomed the Republican Party... and instead earned the Republicans a majority in the Senate and the largest majority in the House in almost 100 years. But Trump still rails against Cruz for not making deals.

This debate thing is a fiasco. He will lose Iowa and his trajectory will be downward.

Trump wants his family to be the new dynasty, the new ruling family. Peddle false hopes to those who are the angriest and most fearful. That would be the kind who lurk and post on this forum, afraid for their country, culture and family.

I agree that it is a fiasco... but not for Trump. It is almost prophetic the parallels between between Trump’s “boycott” and Reagan who did exactly the same thing. Trump is projecting control as Reagan did. And I do not mention Reagan’s name lightly. Among my two most valuable possessions my framed thank you letters from Reagan.

Cruz’s conservatism is dogmatic.

Trump’s conservatism is pragmatic.

The GOP prefers pragmatic to dogmatic.

They can work with pragmatic “conservatives”... like themselves.

Who do you prefer?

A President that is willing to shut down the government in order to preserve the nation, or

A President that is not willing to shut down the government and who has promised to work with Nancy Pelosi and Chuckie Schumer and who has contributed money to their re-election campaigns?

Not much of a choice for me. I’ll take the former.

Reagan did not do the SAME THING He decline dot debate in Iowa, lost the caucus vote there, but recovered in NH by bolding organizing a debate with his opponents at his own expense.

That title should say Donald Trump becomes the choice of the American People because it sure looks like the reality.

Cruz and his shutdown cost us millions and accomplished NOTHING. Lord you still hang your hat on that crap. Good Lord can’t wait to send Cruz back to DC.......his paid vacation is about over.
