Donald Trump may have been conspicuously absent, but Thursday night's Republican debate on Fox News Channel nevertheless scored a 8.4 rating and 12.5 million viewers, according to early numbers from Nielsen. That's higher than the returns for the last Republican debate, Jan. 14 on sister net Fox Business Network, and marks the No. 2 telecast in FNC history.

Meanwhile, all the other cable news networks were covering Trump's competing event in Iowa, during which Trump boasted he raised $5 million for veteran's charities. Those other cable news networks, neither of which blanketed the time period with the event, averaged a respective 1.76 million viewers (CNN) and 1.02 million viewers (MSNBC) between 9 and 11 p.m. ET.

-- I love the spin. --

So, the candidate's supporters are now pointing to teevee ratings as some sort of indirect indicator for election prediction polls?!

Seems like "look! a squirrel!" to me.

And I was really surprised that the viewers INCREASED over the last (January 14) Republican debate. IMPRESSIVE!

You're easily impressed. This debate drew half the audience the first one did on FNC.

The only debate with lower ratings was on Fox Business, which reaches 30 million less households than FNC.

The CNBC debate outdrew this one.

What a bad article. Of course it increased over a debate on Fox Business - that channel isn’t in a third of the houses that FoxNews is.

FNC - 94 million homes, 81% penetration
FBC - 74 million homes, 63% penetration

Figures lie and liars figure

Give me a break. Exactly 1/2 what they had before. Fox business is not on 90% of the TVs in American. What a joke, I guess sheeple will believe this spin.

I’m not saying it’s any indication of polls.

You are inferring something I never said nor even implied.

What I am saying is that among those seeking to draw a conclusion, there is a significant cherry picking of references from which they are attempting to draw context.

The raw context would be better served to compare the FNC numbers to the previous FNC numbers, or the previous CNN numbers, which are platforms holding a similar market penetration.

Alternatively comparing CNN or MSNBC numbers is best done against their previous counter programming numbers.

“Viewership increased compared te last debate b/c not all cable carriers carry FBN. But don’t let that take away from your giddy goosebumps over His High Holiness Saint Rafael Cruz of Manitoba.”

I think it was great that the other candidates got a chance to debate without Trump “sucking all the air from the room.” I’m also glad a fair number of viewers tuned in to watch.

Now it’s clear that the only sucking taking place in the debates are the also-rans. Trump played this masterfully.

Saw comments from ordinary watchers on twitter last night that the debate seemed more focused, serious and on point than previous debates this cycle. If that thought prevailed I would think it would hurt Trump’s standing.

That’s more than the last one, where Trump was in attendance. So maybe the debate fatigue lifted a little. Or maybe Trump skipping made little difference to those who Considered watching the debate.

"It was a much better debate for Trump's absence."

It was as boring and uninspiring as an after-hours, extended-remarks Senate proceeding. Which is exactly what it was....

Fox reaches many more households than Fox Business. Its a dumb comparison.

Better to compare with the last Fox debate, and it’s down 50%
