$12 Billion Obama Plan Would Give Lunches to Poor Children in the Summer
The Daily Signal ^ | January 27, 2016 | Natalie Johnson

The Obama administration proposes to provide free lunch to millions of children who lose access to the subsidized meals once the school year comes to a close.

Under the program announced Wednesday, low-income families who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals during the academic year would receive an electronic benefits card loaded monthly with $45 per child. The benefit would go toward groceries during the summer months when school is closed.

The program will cost taxpayers $12 billion over 10 years if Congress accepts the proposal in President Obama's 2017 budget request, scheduled to be submitted to lawmakers next month.

There is no doubt that govt welfare is corrosive to personal charity liberty.

Maybe if they didn’t buy the “air Jordan’s” for $450 or whatever they are called they could afford lunch for their kids.

Spot on!

Why is this needed if unemployment is truly 5% like BO says?

Have all the children you want the government will raise them for you. Here in Indianapolis there are schools that actually give the children showers at school and have newly washed clothes available for them to change into when they get to school. Teach them early that other people, read government, will take care of all their needs.

Let’s get the fathers employed so they can pay for their own lunches!

Fathers first; mothers too I suppose; but let’s create conditions for private industry to grow to facilitate the required background conditions for financial health within the family so that the mothers who do want take care of their infants and toddlers can - many do! despite the feminist propaganda out there to the contrary.

Bring back manufacturing jobs to American cities! We have the technology today for clean manufacturing processes.

The manufacturing jobs ought to be in America! We can regulate pollution in this day and age- government can spend the money supporting private industry in creating clean manufacturing processes so the parents have jobs instead of hand outs!!

Families can support themselves and self-respect and self determination will return.

Go Trump!

I hear a lot of PSAs on radio that push food banks. According to the celebrities who recorded the ads, somewhere between 13 million and 19 million kids go to bed hungry.

Why do they?

Anyone can get at least 1 month of food stamps/EBT just for asking.

The ads usually include the rider that 'we have enough food in this country to feed everyone'.

Many of these government based or supported programs have become so big that they trip over themselves with duplicate services, etc.

Perhaps if the holders of the EBT cards were not allowed to manipulate the cards and get cash for other non-approved items, they would have money to buy food for their kids.

"For all those who revel in the fact that there are 374 days until President Obama finally gets the hell out of the White House, a cautionary note: Obama and his colleagues are rigging the bureaucracy so that their unique brand of "hope and change" extends far beyond their tenure."

Invading Iraq cost us $1.6 trillion. This lunch scheme is a bad idea in many ways, but to say we don’t have money to spare for it - when we had $1.6 trillion to blow on the wasteful Iraq boondoggle - is going to be a tough argument to make

Also the GOP Hawks like McCains and Lindseeds who want us at war with Syria and Iran seem to think there’s plenty of billions at the federal govts disposal, so $12 million for lunches is chump change

I’ve seen very few of these kids or their parents who look like they’ve skipped a meal ever.

Actually the government feeding program is a big problem. Millions of kids are now obese because of government feeding. It’s been documented. Of course you won’t read about it in the newspaper.
