During a recent visit to the United States, a United Nations (UN) working group has said that the US should consider giving long overdue reparations to descendants of slaves. The group also suggests the US government establish a national human rights commission, and publicly acknowledge that the Transatlantic Slave Trade was a crime against humanity.
The UN working group, called "Experts on People of African Descent," went on a fact-finding mission, which included meetings with African-Americans from multiple cities, including Baltimore, New York, and Chicago. Although they won't release their full report until September, each member read a statement to the press. The group stated that they are "extremely concerned about the human rights situation of African Americans." At a press conference, Chairwoman Mireille Fanon Mendes-France compared police brutality against the black community to Jim Crow-era racial violence:
"The colonial history, the legacy of enslavement, racial subordination and segregation, racial terrorism, and racial inequality in the US remains a serious challenge as there has been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of African descent. Contemporary police killings and the trauma it creates are reminiscent of the racial terror lynchings in the past. Impunity for state violence has resulted in the current human rights crisis and must be addressed as a matter of urgency."
Some members expressed shock at the revelations they experienced during their trip.
"It's very easy in the United States for African Americans to be imprisoned, and that was very concerning," said South African Sabelo Gumedze, a member of the United Nations group.
The group also said they find the lack of a "national system to track killings committed by law enforcement officials" unacceptable. They also noted that despite initiatives to reduce mandatory minimum sentencing, the war on drugs has "led to mass incarceration that is compared to enslavement, due to exploitation and dehumanization of African-Americans." The group even spoke about the school to prison pipeline, and how it recreates the current situation that African-Americans are in.
The real question is whether the US government will even consider these recommendations. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have both opposed reparations in the past. Even democratic socialist Bernie Sanders called reparations "divisive," and instead suggests that the government improve infrastructure to create jobs in poor areas, and make public colleges and universities tuition-free.
If the current president, and every presidential candidate is in opposition to reparations, it's unlikely we will see many politicians jump in and support this cause. The same UN group also visited the US in 2010, and came to similar conclusions.
The group will release their final findings this September in Geneva, Switzerland to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
What is the race, ethnicity and other demographic factors of this group so we know just how biased or unbiased they are in this mà tter.
I dont believe it is feasible or warranted. Probably a boon doggie for lawyers. If it ever came to be then they need to prove whether they had direct lineage to being a slave, Those on the other side need to be proven that they had ties to slave owners. This should not involve Americans that had no connection on either side.
The U.N. is a festering open sore oozing stinking pus. Its sole purpose is to bash Israel and the U.S. Why the heck do we need the U.N., let alone be a major funder of it? Drop kick those bigoted antisemitic fiends into the ocean and put the building to a far better use. Stop funding an entity that hates us. Sell Odungo on eBay, too, while you’re at it.
Obama will push this big time Later he will be the UN president.
Actually, the “war on poverty” has cost $22 Trillion in inflation-adjusted USD’s since 1964.
Right after all the Muslim nations do and all the African Tribes do since both were among the biggest slavers in the world..........
I think all veterans should be paid reparations too. After all, many were drafted (owned by their masters...the government) with no say in the matter and were deemed criminals if they walked off the military reservation.
In essence we vets that were drafted were slaves of the government and certain punishment would follow any attempt to break free.
Our rights under the Constitution were suspended and replaced by the UCMJ just like the old slaveholders of the south took the rights of black slaves back then.
On second thought, we can’t do that because the military was a mix of colors and the black reparations are only for the ancestors of black slaves. Black slavery was worse than mixed slavery by the government.....right?
Maybe I am confused but it seems that the true name for Black Reparations is WELFARE. Maybe we should take all of the welfare money and bennies away from the Blacks and simply give them a single check for reparation and that is that....no more welfare checks and bennies. I’m sure they would invest it wisely and become prosperous in the future. /Sarc
Not Hungary, check it out.
Of course all this nonsense will stop when obama runs the UN...
I meant that to the UN. I thank them for their completely unsolicited, unwanted, and hopefully ignored, input.
No, no, you don’t understand.......Obama only takes CREDIT, never RESPONSIBILITY. He takes credit for anything good that happens during his tenure (which he had no control over) and then blames everyone else for the destruction he has wrought. He would never admit to any culpability for ANYTHING. (now, I really am sure you do get this.....I am just making the point again :)
the reparations are genes
the reparations are America
This is 3rd or 4th time the issue has been in the news since the beginning of the year. My question is ....why? While it has only be mentioned on MSNBC, I wonder if this is trial balloon. Will this be an issue the Democrats go to is they feel black support is dwindling for Hillary?
The only thing they’ll get out of me is the finger!
Sure...we’ll stop the millions of dollars we give the UN, and the free building, and use that money for reparations...$1.95 per person.
I don’t wish for a CW II. We suffered in that war & I’m sure
the purists will argue ‘til Doomsday about the “truth” of
what caused it. - I mostly know where I am today. - There
are numerous Jihadist training camps in many U.S. states,
ours included where they dress in camouflage & cover their
heads with Islamic head & face coverings & crawl around in
the woods (of which they’re supposed to be afraid!) & play
“war”. - Well. We are armed out the wazoo. I still have
my great great grandfather’s old Smith & Wesson revolver
that he carried as a lightskeeper on the Tenn. River in
the early 1900’s. - If the Jihadists can make it crawling
through the snake sinkhole down in front of our place, then
get past our big dog, they’ll face a volley of armaments
from us old codgers. - This is supposed to be Obama’s last
year “ruling” us. - We are done. - He has done nobody no
good nohow! - Fang has said that if they come after his
guns OR his land, they *might* kill us; but we are gonna
for dam* sure take a few of them with us when we go! - I
watched Hillary Clinton flap her piehole on tv in Iowa this
morning for about 2 minutes. She is a canker sore on the
butt of America & so is Wm. Jefferson Clinton.
I have paperwork for men wounded and killed during the civil war fighting for the north to free the slaves. Nobody in my family on either side owned slaves from 1753 on my fathers side and on 1850 something on my mothers side. I find it offensive that a bunch of foreigners come here and tell me to give some people money for something a minority of people in this country did.
Their is not one person alive today who was a slave. There are very, very few people who even have knowledge of a relative who was a slave. There is not anybody alive who owes anybody anything because of slavery.
The United Nations is adding to the dislike the people have for their meddling. If the keep it up, the calls for disbanding the U.N. will get louder and louder.
