That's because, as it was endlessly pointed out, Trump was drawing thousands to his rallies while Cruz was talking with small groups of 20. The subtext being that Trump was going to win in a walk while Cruz was floundering.

So it turns out that Trump drawing larger crowds doesn't mean that he has more supporters.
